So on my wife's Trek 820 Antelope (Circa 1990) the chain won't stay on the top cog - the one by the pedals - it's the largest one.

It does go up to the top cog but then derails back to the middle cog once you let the button go.

Normally to get it to the top cog, you have to push your left thumb and hold it while you pedal. It doesn't "click" up like with my new Trek.

Any ideas as to why this is happening and the possible cure?

The manual isn't real helpful. I've downloaded TOPO onto my computer and would like to start using the 60CSX to guide me in rides in the mountains around S.F. but so far it isn't getting a lot of use.

the bike shop to rebuild the wheel, true the wheel, replace the spoke, all of the above, none of the above...? and how much do you think I'm going to be set back (money-wise)?

Am planning to buy a durable mountain bike but will be using it for serious exercise purposes only on paved roads/trails. I am trying to decide between disc brake and V-brake --- hydraulic disc brake because it is said to have more braking power and V-brake because it is quite simple to adjust by myself if needed. Are disc brakes hard to maintain? Do they need frequent service/check from the bike shop? Please advise.

I love riding and am considering taking the financial plunge and buy a good starter road bike. My budget at this point is $1,000.00 dollars US. I currently use a $100.00 mountain bike for about a 3 mile commute to work, but really like riding and would like to expand my experiences. As a part B to this question, should I look into what I would consider a more durable bike like a mountain bike rather than a traditional ten-speed style since I live in an urban environment and do not always have ideal riding conditions?

It seems pretty simple to true a wheel, but I heard a "thunk" sound a few times on my back wheel, and I think it was some spokes that popped or something, because now the wheel is much more wobbly.

So the question is: Does this mean that I have to take the wheel apart and replace some spokes, or can I just tighten them. I want to know if I should bother to go and buy a spoke wrench, or will it not do any good?

When I ride my bike, my arms feel uncomfortable and my wrists hurt a little. What's the correct position? Should I bend my arms? Should they be straight? How about the wrists? Thanks!

I cycle to work and I cycle long distances frequently. When I go to work I carry all my stuff in a back pack and for other rides I wear my camel back and a Roo (fancy fanny pack thing). This holds all my stuff (CO2 pump, innertubes, tools, sunscreen, food, keys, cellphone). But it is obnoxious!!! I have a racing bike and the bike shop told me I can not get a back rack on my bike. That little puch under the seat just isn't enough. What do you all do?? How in the world do people fit all their stuff in a little pouch and jersy pockets?

I recently got back my bike from my folks and would like to start biking to work. Problem is that I don't really trust the bike that has been sitting in storage for over 5 years. Any advice, websites or places to go so I can get it back up to working condition again. I live in Portland in case anyone knows of a good place.
