What are the benefits of thoughs single mono fork shock things as compared to a standard front fork suspension. Its a confusing question but I think you know what I mean.

A guy friend said he shaved his legs because he was a very serious bike rider. He said a lot of guys do it. He looks great with smooth legs, but is that true? Is this a common thing now?

I have a $150 road bike and it works fine for me. I don't race and I ride to stay fit. What are the advantages of a more expensive, lets say $2000 road bike if any? What would I gain if I get a bike like that ?

I have a sweet road bike, with awesome clipless pedals, great computer, high quality light, tires so thin and frictionless that you just cruise up hills and blow everyone away and when I get home I can carry it up the stairs with a pinky.
This is great and all when I'm working on speed or long distances in nice dry weather. I have come to the conclusion I need a bike to bum around on. One I can ride on the road with, yet cross a grass yard and ride over gravel/dirt paths with. One I can ride in the pouring rain, jump some puddles, and throw in the front yard and not have a heart attack if it got stolen. One to take down the street for a quick stop at the grocery store or ride with less experienced friends with. Not necessarily a mountain bike per se, but a hybrid type. I'm too fanatical to get a huffy...but have too expensive a bike to want a another real expensive one just to bum around on. What do you suggest?

I had been riding a new bike for a week and notices that ocassionally while pedaling, it feels like my chain gets loose and skips for a second. This doesn't happen too often, only about 3-4 ocassions on a 24-mile ride. I know it is not actually coming loose because I continue pedaling and is able to keep going. I want to know if this is not something to be concerned about or does it need to be checked? I hope you get the idea of what I am trying to explain about my bike situation, I do not know how to explain it any better.

Currently in my early 40's. I haven't spent much time riding a bike since I was a kid, though I have used the Lifecycle at the gym many times. Now I have moved to a place where there are a lot of outdoor trails and I want to get into outdoor cycling. But I don't want to spend a lot of money for a fancy bike right away, since I'm still a beginner.

What is a good entry-level bike that I should look for. What price range are we talking? 300? 500?

Thanks.

Can anyone give advice for the best kind of bike to get for my needs:
I have a 4 mile cycle to work everyday, almost all on country and suburban roads.
I'll be doing it in all weathers.
The area where I live is hilly (almost as bad as Bristol).
Occasionally I'll take shortcuts along stoney footpaths.
I'll need to take a panier on the back.

Mountain bikes look the most sensible since I'll be going on footpaths sometimes, but I worry about if they are slower on normal roads (because the tyres are thicker and knoblier).
Is it worth paying the extra for bikes that have the front suspension (and back sometimes), or is this just a gimmick.
How much should I expect to pay for a bike that will last me a good while doing this 8 mile journey a day (I don't want to have to replace bits after 6 months).

I live in a town of 125,000. A human insect came into my garage last night and cut the cable on my mountain bike and stole it.
Besides pawn shops, where else can I keep an eye out for it
to turn up? I am so infuriated.

I've got an old Norco Kokanee that needs a rebuilt hub, so I figured, why not upgrade to an 8-speed, but I noticed that the sealed 8-speed hub/wheelset from my newer Marin won't fit the old Norco frame (i.e., the hub is too wide for the area allocated). Why is this? Why aren't all frames/hubs a standard width? Mostly, is there any way to get a 8-speed hub onto this bike, or am I stuck with a 6/7? Thanks.

I bought a bike last August 4th on the hardware store know as Canadian Tire (Ontario, Canada). The bike seemed to perform well until today when the derailer somehow twisted itself and is now colliding with the chain, not to mention the fact that the back tire seemed to be slightly dismounted as well.

When I bought it the original price was CA$299.99 but I only payed CA$120.00 because it had the word "MAY" painted on both sides in an unremovable red paint (the bike's blue). I accidentally caused a couple of scratches on the handle which do not alter performance but makes it look used. They're now on sale at CA$149.99 but I would need the money back from the first bike and I don't trust the store anymore. I could try to give it back but 32 days have passed (you can only return items 30 days later) and there's the scratches to wory about. Selling it on eBay is a possibility but again there's the scratches and paint to deal with which would devaluate it's value seriously.

I'm a beginner who is overwhelmed by the choices out there. I'd like a nice cushy saddle that won't kill my seat bones, and not the hard thin ones that look like they are torture devices. Please recommend a good female-specific saddle. I'm considering the Fizik Arione, Selle Italia Signo, Selle Italia Flite Gel. thanks!

It is the rear wheel on a 15 speed mountain bike and it appears to be about 3/8 of an inch out of true in about 20° of arc around the wheel. I am using the amount of shift in the brake caliper to judge the amount of bend in the wheel. Yes I am trying to not spend an arm and a leg as I am limited on funds
