Brian Cashman traded Gary Sheffield against his wishes this past off -season. Although Sheffield WAS injured last season he returned 100% healthy and ready to play. Sheffield was the last African-American player on the Yankees roster, the team now has no African-Americans (Jeter considers himself bi-racial). Sheffield along with Bernie Williams are two less right handed batters that helped the heavily left handed Yankee lineup against right handed pitchers. Sheffield's replacement Bobby Abreu will not return after this year, while Sheffield wanted to be a Yankee for the rest of his career. Sheffield is currently hitting .262, with 12 HR's, 29 RBI, 7 stolen bases, 31 walks, .376 obp, and .492 slugging with 0 errors. Abreu is hitting .228, with 2 HR's, 22 RBI, 8 stolen bases, 24 walks, .313 obp, and .289 slugging with 2 errors. Abreu has added yet another left hand bat when right handers are sorely needed.
