Brian Cashman traded Gary Sheffield against his wishes this past off -season. Although Sheffield WAS injured last season he returned 100% healthy and ready to play. Sheffield was the last African-American player on the Yankees roster, the team now has no African-Americans (Jeter considers himself bi-racial). Sheffield along with Bernie Williams are two less right handed batters that helped the heavily left handed Yankee lineup against right handed pitchers. Sheffield's replacement Bobby Abreu will not return after this year, while Sheffield wanted to be a Yankee for the rest of his career. Sheffield is currently hitting .262, with 12 HR's, 29 RBI, 7 stolen bases, 31 walks, .376 obp, and .492 slugging with 0 errors. Abreu is hitting .228, with 2 HR's, 22 RBI, 8 stolen bases, 24 walks, .313 obp, and .289 slugging with 2 errors. Abreu has added yet another left hand bat when right handers are sorely needed.

What the Yanks really miss is his fire and desire. they're all a bunch of paid mercenaries devoid of any pride. They're saying all of the right things. Sheff would light a fire under those guys and get them to play. Torre isn't the kind pf manager to fire the guys up. He needs the self-motivational players like Tino and Paul O'Neill. Sorry, Giambi just doesn't cut it. Most of those guys could give a darn about what Torre has to say. But in Abreu's defense on the errors, Sheffield is the DH.

Jeter, though bi-racial, he's still an African American. So to say the Yankees have no African-American on their team is not true.

With that said, it seems like they should have kept Sheffield. The Abreu deal is turning out to be a bust.

As a Phillies fan, I sure am glad the Yankees were there to take his massive contract off our hands. Maybe they'd like Pat Burrell too? Having said that, I did like Bobby alot when he was with Philly and I think he's just in a bad slump-I don't think he got old THAT quick. Even so, yeah, a bat like Sheff's will always be missed. He has the ability to go into one of his hot streaks and carry a team; I'm not sure that Bobby is that type. Of course, neither is a young guy, and you're always gambling with older players that they will keep producing the way that they always have.

He is greatly missed. Although a loudmouth, he has on of the best swings in baseball and isn't a horrible fielder. He is better the Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabbrea (sorry about the spelling), Johnny Damon, and Hideki Matsui. And the Yanks are 13 and a half games back which means something. GO SOX!!!!

Sheffield and Abreu are one in the same as far as what they can bring to the Yankees. Right now the Yankee hitting is in a slump and the pitching is just about to get healthy with Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, and Clemems about ready to go as a group. I believe you will see a different Yankee team going forward even without Sheffield.

If you watched Sheffield last night against the Devil Rays you bet he's missed. 2 hr and 5 rbi. Plus he has brought a ton of energy to the Tigers that I feel the Yanks are missing.

he is certainly not missed

so hes finally coming around

before that game he was .250, 10 HRs and 24 RBIs

half of all ML have similar numbers

abreu is slumping, but yankees fans never liked sheffield. hes not a team player. hes a free-swinging seat filler

and despite popular belief that is NOT yankee baseball

I think Abreu has the ability to match and pass Sheffields numbers but he is just in a massive slump atm. As with any sport confidence is a huge factor and the Yanks just have none atm.

Of course the Yankees miss him. They arent playing very well lack of production in a few areas. they would love his 21 homers right now. The real question is, does Gary miss the Yankees? and the answer is no.
