I am not a christian but my hobby is studying religions. I've talked to many a christian who doesn't know the history of their religion.

If I mentioned Gnostics or Mithra most christians eyes glaze over and act like I am making things up. Mention The Council of Nicea and you would think I was speaking a different language.

I've met many a christian who can quote passages of the bible but ask them in depth questions and forget it.

It's popular these days to believe that, in regards to election, predestination and similar doctrines, God chose us in eternity past because we chose God in the present. Is that Biblical? How does God's omnipotence factor into our choice affecting God's actions?

I'd like to hear from fellow believers what you believe regarding the elect of God and why you believe it.

It's important to hear what the other parts of the body of Christ has to say about this, y'know? ;)

I have been researching the Mormons and want to join the one that is the most true to the teaching of Joseph Smith but I can't find a web site for them. They are called the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints.

As I kid I was never afraid of the dark (only after seeing a scary movie). When I was a teenager my Dad had me move down to the Den/Guest Room because we had 4 bedrooms for 6 people and I needed my own space.

The first few nights were the scariest and most unexplainable I've ever had. The third night there I had turned the light off one minute before I heard what sounded like a dog growling in the middle of the room. We don't have a dog.

A few weeks later I had woken up the the strangest sound ever. It seemed to be coming from everywhere. It sounded like a mixture between ET and an animal breathing really heavy.

Even before the night with the dog I felt this pang of fear. Like I said, I had never been afraid of the dark, and I was fine even when my parents left me alone for the weekend.

My question is, is the work of the Devil? I don't believe he house is haunted (or els I would have noticed stuff like this before.

I would appreciate SERIOUS responses.

This may sound silly , but here it goes.My husband will do it openly admitting that because he is a man he will always deal with it, the sin of lust. He will check out other women because he has been told that the first look is not a sin and he also started looking at women on the computer , he said that they were just in bikinis, but I doubt it was the whole truth, and then I caught him in the bathroom relieving himself! He would never admit to cheating on me , though I strongly sense that he has in my heart. I feel so betrayed, and he thinks he has done nothing wrong. Is this grounds for divorce? What about matthew 5:27-28?

some christians are always talking about "the christian thing to do" (being empathetic, kind, not excluding others [especially for stupid reasons] and excepting others), but then discriminate gays people with "wrong" religeons?

(note: i'm not trying to generalize ALL christians for doing this, i know many who keep their beliefs to themselves and respect others and the desisions they make for themselves... but i also know many, many more who don't..... i'm just curious if anyone can explain this to me?)

I see allot of people giving advice, sharing their knowledge but asking very few questions. Do those that refrain from asking questions, as often as others, gone to a self proclaimed higher level, where you feel you have all the answers with nothing new to learn?

Real, objective evil is the lack or absence of goodness. That is, the presence of evil presupposes the existance of an objective moral standard that is being violated. If real evil exists, then an objective standard of goodness by which something is deemed evil must also exist. Where could this standard of goodness come from if we are all just cosmic accidents produced by purely physical forces?
The existance of evil is used to argue against belief in God. What then, is the cosmic standard by which we judge evil, if it isn't God?

Once again, it's time to clear up the misconceptions about Einstein. I just saw several of his quotes being misused.

As much as god-believers would like to claim him as their own, Einstein was not a religious man. He often used words like "god" and "religion" metaphorically.

In Einstein's OWN WORDS, "It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."

Some people say he was a pantheist, and I think that fits with what I've read of him. Pantheism is the belief that the entire universe is god.

I did a survey, and found that 21 out of 29 polled are Christians. However, there seems to be an unusually large amount of Christian bashing on Yahoo answers, with little or no defense of the faith.

In my survey at least, (with yes or no answers) those who answered that they were Christians recieved an automatic "thumbs down" vote by the level 2 guys.

Am I just paranoid, and if not: why, If there are so many of us, is nobody speaking up?

Why do you guys think people get offended so easily in this section? Why do people resort to name-calling or offending others instead of respectfully stating their disagreements?

To me, it's just like a little kid throwing a hissy fit at Wal-Mart. When someone starts getting so riled up to the point where they feel it necessary to use bad language and personally attack other people...as far as I am concerned, that is when they have "lost" the argument, and it isn't worth it anymore.

I have my own thoughts as to why people overreact, but I wanted to hear some from you guys as well. Can we not discuss beliefs in a civil manner anymore?

Anyways, even if you don't answer, I hope you have a nice night and a great holiday tomorrow. Isn't it great to live in a country like America where we have the freedom to believe what we want, among many other wonderful freedoms?

Apparently there is a new drug in the works that can minimize the trauma and memory associated with a bad event. Do you think that if this is used in a widespread manner, people will become more nonchalant about terrible things? Afterall, if you can take a pill and the bad memories disappear will the world somehow become an easier place to live?
