some christians are always talking about "the christian thing to do" (being empathetic, kind, not excluding others [especially for stupid reasons] and excepting others), but then discriminate gays people with "wrong" religeons?

(note: i'm not trying to generalize ALL christians for doing this, i know many who keep their beliefs to themselves and respect others and the desisions they make for themselves... but i also know many, many more who don't..... i'm just curious if anyone can explain this to me?)

1 Peter 3:15-16
But in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

A Christian should not "bad mouth" or condemn any one in and of themselves. The Christian can only look to the Bible for the answers and watch for the "fruit" that is shown in one's life...but still not judge.

A follower of Christ should be gentle and lovng even when it is hard to be. Yet are we not sometimes...yes.

A Christian knows that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble...but do we sometimes become haughty and puffed up?...oh yes

Look at the apostle Paul. He would preach against homosexuality then and he would condemn the practice now. In 1 Corinthians 6:9 he said, Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul never backed down in preaching the gospel even unto his death when it came to what you would call "forcing his religion on others".
Paul didn't preach the gospel to make those doing wrong, feel good about what they were doing.
Paul taught against what you would title "wrong religions" and never gave an inch of truth to spare someone from being uncomfortable.
Yet Paul himself said he was among the least of the apostles. That is the attitude a Christian must have.
Paul struggled with himself the same way that Christians today do...except Paul "picked up his cross daily" and didn't let sin have a foothold in his life.
Paul was the most drastically changed apostle of them all through his encounter with Jesus...Yet jesus died before He revealed Himself to Paul.
Paul cared for the souls of all because he came to preach the gospel. If you confronted him today with the problems of this technologically advanced world of today...he would tell you the same thing that he preached thousands of years ago.
The Word of the Lord is timeless and doesn't fade or change.
The truth is we cannot keep our beliefs to ourselves...but we should share out of love...not bitterness...but do I sometimes...unfortunately yes...but I am trying

This is my best swag at it.
People accept Jesus into their heart as Lord and Savior. This is awesome. Then they find a church fellowship that they feel at home in. That fellowship will start to disciple them by expounding on the truths in the Bible. Part of that discipleship is repentance from their sins with the help of the Holy Spirit. People will take that discipleship and externalize it and start to demand non believers live by the same standards they themselves can not outside of the Holy Spirit. The non Christians are not supposed to be held to any of the standards set for the children of GOD. To try to impose them is arrogant and ignorant at least and down right rude and hypocritical at best.
Many of us are not aware we are even doing it.

American Christianity has becomed very warped over the years by allowing politics in the front door. As soon as you try to legislate morals, the probems will begin, and will not end until there is a REAL separation of church and state. In the meantime, it is just up to people to try to muddle through and ignore the really spiteful ones.

Christians who live by the bible take that little book and read it like a news paper. Anything said in the bible, written by the same people who thought the world was flat, is truth.

So obviously because many animals have homosexual partners and engage in homosexual behavior, and we're so above animals, homosexuality is "wrong".

I have three sons. If one is doing something I believe is not just wrong but that it will hurt him am I being judgemental by telling him so? Or is it because I love him that I warn him and possibly give a consequence for his behavior? Because he has done wrong do I then not love him? I still love him I just hate what he has done. Too many people confuse disaproval and caring for with hatred and bigotry. I can disagree with and believe someone is wrong and still love them.

Did you know that at one time the Bible was used to keep African Americans in slavery and to subjugate women to men? Did you know that now we Christians do not do this? Why not? Because we have grown and accepted this as a misuse of the word of God. So I have confidence that this will happen someday about homosexuality.

Did Jesus preach and preach about sexual sins? No, he did not focus on them. He focused on the bigger things--loving your neighbor and your enemies as well, having faith, hope and love, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and so on...My personal favorite is the story whose lesson includes letting those without sin cast the first stone.

Before this quesion can be answered it would be helpful if you could define what you mean by "discriminate"? Does believing an action is wrong equal discrimination or is there more to discrimination than that?

jeremyrbennet: The bible also speaks against shellfish. Why aren't you picketing the local Red Lobster?

It's about cherry picking. And lots of religious fundamentalists have a strange fixation on gay people. Probably because they cannot fathom someone who thinks differently from themselves.
