When I became an atheist, I didn't just suddenly decide, "Hey, I think I'm going to be an atheist now." It was much more complicated than that. After spending a lot of time learning about science, atheism, philosophy, history, skepticism, and so on, I was sitting on my bed one day pondering life when I sudden realized, "I just don't believe Christianity anymore." It wasn't a choice. It just happened. It was the result of learning and finding things out for myself rather than just believing everything my parents, the church, and the Bible told me to believe. My mind had freed. I felt like a giant weight had been lifted off of my shoulder. Not much has changed in my life. But the one thing that has changed, and that's the way I look at life and the universe, and that has made me very happy.

Anyway, that's my story. So, consider my question very carefully and answer: Is belief or disbelief a choice?

i ask this because in other answers about the birth of jesus, he was all from god and not mary's dna. he was pure. if this is the case, then he would not of had a bellybutton, because he couldn't have been attached to her placenta as that would have let her sinful dna into the growing god fetus, correct?

but evey picture and statue i have seen he does. wouldn't that have been some proof that he could have used to say that he was the son of god - his lack of belly button? is this proof that he is NOT god?

The bible talks about three heavens; one being outer space.
If you look at

Psalm 104:2
2Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

wouldn't this be talking about the expanding of the universe (aka the heavens) that Edwin Hubble discovered 3000 years after mentioned in the bible?

or Job 9:8
"8Which alone spreadeth out the heavens...".

Also scientist say the bing bang started from a "A singularity" which means no volume isn't this the same concept in Hebrews 11:3 where it basically says that the starting point of the universe was invisible (no volume).

Also in Genesis 1:1 the Hebrew word for "created" (bara) means a "creation from nothing"

Doesn't it almost sound like sciences "big bang theory" and the bible are almost on the same wave length... Universe created from nothing aka a singularity and the universe is expanding??
Only difference is the bible claimed this long before science.

Any thoughts on this?
just wondering

I'm hearing about it more often than not, churches staging miracles along with televangelists. It's a growing trend and these people who fall for them do not believe holy men can lie. For example, there was a church near Houston where a women spoke in tongues and a Chinese-American was there to say he understood every word she said. I'm thinking how easy is that? Either teach the woman a few words of Chinese or have the Chinese-American lie. Who would know?

They say they accept that Bible writers were all inspired by God, and also believe a lot of saints' divine revelations. Nowadays, how do they decide which peoples' dreams, ideas, and revelations they will believe?

I believe that everything that religious people call a “miracle” or God’s answer to prayers is merely coincidence. In an indirect way, you can say that the Creator has performed miracles due to the fact that there is life and it has placed resources on earth that allow us to do great things. However, I do not believe that there is any God that intervenes in human affairs. I know that you will tell me about the time you almost died and you prayed to God and a “miracle” happened and you lived happily ever after. But I must ask how you explain all of the prayers by good people who die horrible deaths and suffer great pain that go unanswered. Christians usually respond to these questions by saying “God had a different plan for the person” or “God has a reason for everything.” Why is it that when good things happen and “prayers are answered”, Christians can explain exactly what God wanted to happen, but when something bad happens, Christians give these “Plead the 5th” answers or they say it was the devil. Of course, if you believe that the devil is capable of preventing God from answering prayers, wouldn’t that mean that the devil is more powerful than God? Your thoughts?

I know I do now..it was the strangest thing. I haven't prayed in a while, so last night I gave up some time to pray *especially* to the guardian angels. I just had an urge to.
I woke up this morning and heard that my little brother got hit by a car, but miraculously he wasnt hurt..even though the impact of the truck was very large. I remember praying last night and it made me realize that we all have an angel watching over us 0:)

You can't prove faith, so why do you keep asking for proof about someone's faith? Faith cannot be proven. Also, please keep in mind I'm not saying I belong to any faith.

I keep hearing about how atheists have no morals, and are hedonistic, etc...

Do you know any personally that have given you this impression? Do you know any that haven't? ARE YOU SURE?

I am your friend, your neighbor, your Girl Scout leader. I'm that person who stopped by the side of the road to help you fix your tire. I'm your sister, your co-worker, a fellow member of the PTA. Your children are friends with my children. Unless you bring up god, you will never know I'm an atheist.
I support Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, am an organ donor, and a bone marrow donor.

Who exactly gave you the impression that I'm amoral and a bad person?
