In a response to another question, someone mentioned "the false doctrine that Mary was born of a virgin." Does anyone here believe that Catholicism teaches that Mary was born of a virgin?

'It isn't just that I don't believe in God and, naturally, hope that I'm right in my belief. It's that I hope there is no God! I don't want there to be a God; I don't want the universe to be like that.'

Isn't hope the result of faith? I don't see any argument around this being a statement of faith.

Friend , what say you?

I can understand that different colors have different...hmm...attunements? Is it also the case that different scents have corresponding attunements? If that is the case, which is the stronger attunement...color or scent? I've been using what I have available to me, a vanilla scented candle, and the aroma is pleasing to me and helps me to concentrate. Is that perhaps more important than the color/scent attunements? Or will my spells be stronger if I use a color and scent that go more with the type of spell I am casting?

Colossians 2:8
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

So now they can even point to a phrase in the Bible to invalidate every word of philosophy that doesn't suit them? Unbelievable! What do you think about the vast reserve of Bible quotes for every possible argument against Christianity?

Is it necessary for atheists and theists to get along,

If we are to get along, is it necessary that we talk to one another,

If we communicate with one another and find out what we have in common, do you think this will have a benefit to our house?

There is a place at the table for everyone, don't you agree?

The home schooling parents I know are christian, were not good students themselves, not college educated, and seem to have an agenda. Granted public school has it's drawbacks but I cherish the time I had in public school. Just meeting new people and forming bonds that I never would have in the home. I went to a school where white people were the minority and learned so many life lessons from that experience. It just weirds me out to know that there are large amounts of young people that will become adults, not knowing anything except what their parents chose to tell them. It doesn't seem fair to the child. It's like taking their freedom to choose what they think away from them.

Hey, evolutionaryists.

Why, if it has been postulated that the eukaryotic cell is a colony of prokaryotes ( hence the existence of mitochondrial DNA), do I still get a cold?

Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, said last Friday that he thought that homosexuality was biological, and he supported in utero medical interventions to prevent it.

How do other Christians respond to these statements?

Are surgical or medical interventions reasonable to prevent other "sins?" (For example, requiring single people to take depo provera or other hormones to reduce sexual urges, or sedating parshioners who accept evolutionary theory.)

Just a question, but in another answer someone said (paraphrased) that if you aren't a Christian, you don't know half of what the Bible says.

I'm sorry, but in my years on this Earth, I daresay that I've spent a great deal of my time studying the Bible, much of it trying to be the sort of Christian that preachers were telling me I should be.

I've listened to Hank Hanegraff, Jim Dobson, R. C. Sproul and many others. I accumulated a fair library of Christian materials (which, unlike many, I read). I've read through and studied various versions and translations of the Bible. I worked through many issues before deciding that Christianity wasn't for me. (Not that I reject the teachings of Christ, but certainly the church).

I spent 25 years in Christian music ministry, taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and worked retreats.

How can someone think that just because I'm not a Christian, I don't understand the Bible?

How do you decide how to raise your children regarding religion?
I'm Atheist and my hubby is Catholic. He doesn't mind my beliefs, or lack of actually and he doesn't question me, and I don't question him.
He respects the fact that I will eat meat on Fridays if I want, and I respect the fact that he doesn't.
His only thing is that we get the kids baptized catholic. After that the religion thing is up to them. The confirmation and everything else will be up to the child.
Just wondering how everyone else makes it work.

"I do not pretend to be able to prove that there is no God. I equally cannot prove that Satan is a fiction. The Christian God may exist; so may the Gods of Olympus, or of ancient Egypt, or of Babylon."

Bertrand Russell in his book 'Why I am not a Christian and other essays...'

Comment: I do not understand the fact that ALL monotheistic religions claim their god is the 'Only True God'. What Russell is basically saying is that if the Christian God IS likely to exist, so are other gods.

Come on, people! This is food for the mind! Just trying to have a discussion here.

Other quotations I like from Bertrand Russell:

"I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong."

"Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so."

"Patriots always talk of dying for their country but never of killing for their country."

"So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence."

The city I live in used to have a "cross busing" program to promote intergration in the school system. It ultimately failed...our city is still segregated among racial and class lines...

But what if there was a cross busing program for churches? For example a baptist church in a poor neighborhood traded a few members from a rich neighborhood and vice versa? Not just to bring a little extra money in for impoverished churches, but to help with the social networking aspect of it. The poor people would get to know people who have access to decent employers where they could get reccomendations...

Do you think the people in your church would go for it or would be afraid to participate?

I am not trying to bait you, you may have noticed im not a church person myself, but I have a lot of churchy friends/family in poor neighborhoods, and a lot of churchs in the neighborhood I live in ...which is a good neighborhood ...I was wondering if I should bother bringing up the idea ...

I don't want people bashing the bible or telling me God doesn't exist. That's not what I'm looking for. If you believe God created all things, tell me why it's NOT possible for him to have intended things evolve over time, because I'm having a difficult time understanding why they have to be conflicting issues.

http://www.deerparkcenter.org/NewFiles/hhdl_folder/tickets.html When I was going to buy tickets to see him, I noticed that if you pay alot of money you get preferential treatment. This does not seem very buddhist to me, and not like the Dalai Lama at all. I have tried talking to the Tibetan office in New York a few times about this. The guy I have to talk to is always gone when I call. I still like the his teachings, but this thing bothers me about the preferred treatment. Any ideas?
