I was just wondering for the Atheist's, did you EVER beleive in God? What made you 'see the light' and change your mind? A bad church expeirence? Forced to go to church at a young age?

For you ex-Catholic's; what happened that you left the Catholic chruch? Did you join another chruch? Did you become an Atheist? Did you have something very bad happen to you that made you leave? Do you miss the chruch but can't forgive?

Thanks for answering!

It's amazing, and even 'unbelievable' that so many people will readily accept beliefs handed down to them by their parents (and society) just simply because they are their parents and authority figures. They don't take the time to, and don't bother to question their religions and beliefs, and would even think it taboo to do so

I am generally interested in figuring out life. I study all religions and all the spirituality I can find. I practice certain Sadhanas like meditation, but I am not willing to believe absolutly anything. Rather, I am 'open minded' to everything. A certain quote by Buddha comes to mind: "Believe nothing..."

I compare and contrast everything I hear or read about that has to do with life, God, afterlife etc. and I take no sides.

I am in favour of people like U.G Krishanmurti who seem to challenge religion and sprituality, yet I am not willing to believe in what he 'teaches' unless i find it to be true.

I was just wondering what the worlds' thoughts are on this

My brother just came back from a visit to Hong Kong and brought me a small jade figure of the Buddha as a souvenir. I am Lutheran, so the Buddha means nothing to me from a religious standpoint, I just look at it as an interesting little object. However, the gift started me thinking whether those practicing Buddhism would view such a gift as sacreligious, since it was given not in a spirit of religious respect, but in the spirit of "hey, this is neat!" And whether those who are not Christian get statues of Jesus or the Virgin Mary as souvenirs when they visit Jerusalem or Rome?

No one can escape the wrath of God, but could unbelievers circumvent the pain, fear, and so on that the book of Revelations depicts will happen on Earth? If I was an unbeliever, and I had the choice between fighting the devil and suicide, I would choose the latter.

Why do you believe in what you believe? What is the foundation of your belief; what it was built on, faith or reason? Since the two have completely different meanings, DO NOT state both. Faith OR reason.

Faith:

Is a belief, trust, or confidence, not based on (and mostly opposed to) logic, reason, or empirical data, but based fundamentally on volition often associated with a transpersonal relationship with God, a higher power, a person, elements of nature, and/or a perception of the human race as a whole. Faith can be placed in a person, inanimate object, state of affairs, proposition or body of propositions such as a religious creed.

Reason;

An underlying fact or cause that provides logical sense for a premise or occurrence: There is reason to believe that the accused did not commit this crime.
The capacity for logical, rational, and analytic thought; intelligence.
Good judgment; sound sense. To determine or conclude by logical thinking.

I'm gonna start reading about all faiths. Not to necessarily believe in any particular one, just to learn about different beliefs.
I've begun the Vedas.

Job endured one of the greatest demonic attacks in the Bible, and his ability to remain faithful was a true sign of his love for God.

However, when we "practice" sin, we give Satan a foothold in our lives, and the Lord will use those opportunities to humble and teach his children.

Despite all the blessings and protection the Lord provided Job, he had become self-righteous. In Job 33:1-9 we are reminded that BEFORE Job's problems began he boasted "I am pure without sin, clean and free of guilt". Wow! That's a huge statement for an imperfect human.

Jesus was the only person who walked the earth in the flesh who could proclaim such a thing. Self-righteousness is a PRACTICING sin...which means Job may have been this way for quite some time. This sin also eventually leads to greater sins...namely pride, greed, etc. So it's possible the Lord wanted to prevent Job from something only he could forsee.

Did anyone else pick up on this, as I rarely here Christians discuss it??

I am a catholic but don't know much about the religion and its beliefs. Just going to church doesn't help though. I would also like to learn what the differences are between protestant and catholic. Also, if i chose to do so, how I would change religion. So this is two questions, (a) who should I go to to learn about these two religions and (b) how would I change religions?

Okay, anyone can be closed-minded. But take this definition into account:

Stubbornly unreceptive to new ideas; not tolerant of the beliefs or opinions of others. Bigoted, hidebound, illiberal.

Okay, anyone that honestly studies Evolution will realize the amount of evidence and obvious credibility it holds. If you cannot admit to this then you are closed-minded. If you are unable to even enter the classroom with an open mind, willing to accept what seems logical to you, then you are closed-minded.

Be honest, would you be able to study evolution with an open mind, believing that your current belief in God and creation could possibily be wrong? If not, then you are all of the words above.

P.S.
To those of you that attack non-believers with the same argument:
Most of us left religion after years of believing in the bible but finally opening our minds enough to find the truth and grow.

The only act of violence I ever remember Jesus committing was attacking some money lenders in a temple. And Jesus was the ultimate pacifist! If money lenders made Jesus that mad, isn't that a sign for Christians to never have bank accounts or loans and to attack the true enemies of the establishment, crooked companies that leach off misery?

Doesn't seem so, when everyone in power these days is a 'Christian'.

I read about the Torah code on the net and to be truthful, It's so far over my head, I can't tell if it makes sense or not. For instance....in Hebrew letters, Genesis contains the word "Torah" if you use every 50th letter, starting with the sixth letter. So does Exodus. So does Numbers. So does Deuternonomy. Leviticus does not. It contain the Jewish word for God within this code. There's a lot more.

What do you guys think of this?
