Both of these apply to me. For the first question, yes I did believe in God at one time and considered myself as part of the Catholic Church. There was no one event that caused me to become an atheist. I have been forced to go to church every week my whole life and I started to get tired of it. I first rebelled because of going to church and eventually i realized that i disagree with a lot of the church's teachings. For example, they argue that God is an extremely loving God but I think that if a God was as loving as the church believes there would not be a hell. There are also many other church teachings that I disagree with . Several of my friends are athiests too and and they were large factors because I was afraid to tell people about my atheism and I was in denial myself because all of my life my parents and teachers (I go to a Catholic school) associated atheism with evil. Now I realize that I can be an atheist and still be a good person. And to answer your last question, no, I do not miss being part of the Catholic Church.

Born and raised catholic. went to church, went to a provate catholic school. Thats not why I'm atheist though. I strated thinking about it and after about three years of thought and observations I came to the conclusion that there doesn't have to be a god, there doesn't have to be a reason to everything, this could just be an accident. I think the main thing that made me start thinking about it was the fact that there are so many different religions, how is just one right. It's not possible for so many people to believe in so many different things and only one be right. That was my first thought, so i became non-denominational. i believed in god but thought religion was completely wrong(which it is, all of them). Then I started thinking about why I beleved in god, and I realized it was because I was afraid of what would happen after I died and because there just "had" to be a god. Thats when I realized I was just fooling myself. I realized there is no god, there is no reason for anything, we live and then we die. Why does there ahve to be an afterlife, or a god that wants all this f-ing attention. There doesn't. We're here so have fun do what you want live a good life, don't do it out of fear or for hope of reward then your fooling yourself. There is no god, and noone can convince me otherwise.

I once thought I believed in god. I tried for many years to feel the presence of god and to find some truth in what the bible told me. I studied and read the bible cover to cover and it seemed the more I searched the more I didn't believe. I really struggled against my ever growing disbelief trying different flavors of christianity trying to find god. But in the end I decided atheism was the best choice for me and I am now quite happy and content with my life. More than I was 5 years ago.

I sacrificed everything, and I got nothing in return but one disappointment after another, and yet people said I didn't have faith even though it was not true. It's like no matter how strongly I believed or prayed until the cows came home, I still got screwed, and was told that I was still doing this or that wrong. I now believe only what I see, hear, feel , and touch. I am a much better person now, and I can only believe in myself.

I'm an Atheist (well, agnostic, really), and that's just the way I was brought up. My parents didn't tell me not to believe in God, they just told me to believe whatever I believed. There wasn't really a "see the light" moment. My church never told us to believe in God, either. They also told me to believe whatever I felt was right. And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I feel that I have a more open mind because of it.

My husband is an ex-Catholic turned Atheist. He said not only was he forced to go to chuch even after he told his parents he didn't believe what they were teaching, but he was chastised by the nuns several times for asking questions about God's existence. His parents still made him go through first communion to "make the grandparents happy".

I tried to believe in God, but couldn't do it. I prayed to God to help me to become faithful, but I got nothing. Now I realize that it was because I was a rational person and lacked a certain capacity for self-deceit.

Why set people up for a bashing party? I am not an ex Catholic but, I think many people will use this to bash the religion.
