Take the Zeus challenge, and deny Zeus....if you dare!

If you are a theist, wouldn't you be more comfortable in a religion or set of beliefs that is flexible enough to accommodate scientific discoveries?

Obviously, this question is directed toward members of mainstream religions - most of which are based on books written long before the age of scientific advances. This is not intended as an attack, so please don't pretend it's another example of "persecution."

At what point will the followers of these religions become embarassed enough to either abandon these binding beliefs, or at least change the disproven dogma? Is it really a good form of worship to continue believing in something when our own god-given abilities have proven it to be wrong?

I am NOT suggesting an end to the belief in God. I myself am a theist, but in my religion there are only basic ethics, not rigid dogma from the pens of the ancients.

sort of "other" criteria would you find "acceptable" to convince you into believing in God? ...And let's say that God happened to "appear" to you one day, wouldn't you by default just conclude that his obvious appearance could be "rationally" or "scientifically" explained, instead of just accepting the frickin' obvious?

You are a Christian so please be honest.

Unless you read every verse and understood it for yourself, you are placing your faith in the hands of a human to tell you what the bible means. And with so many different sects and views on substantially contradicting concepts, how could you claim that what you believe is correct? Shouldn't you read if for yourself and believe only what you come to find the meaning to be?

Other examples:

"like a camel through the eye of a needle."

"I am like a clanging gong or a crashing cymbal."

"You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church."

"The Lord is my Shepherd."

Poetic things carry more meaning than declarative sentences. Why insist on science existing in the Bible instead of treating it as a poetic discourse on your God and humanity?

Don't get me wrong the gospel of jesus is all true but today's bible(s) have been altered time and again that it contradicts itself.

Infact, so far there is about 101 contradictions:

I don't know why people still believe it all when some of it doesn't match up.

So many more things to come.

-are you ignoring Jesus words? Jesus is seperating himself from God. Jesus and God are two different things:

Mark 10:17-18
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

-this is your God:
Deuteronomy 4:39
The lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

-even Jesus himself said that he is HIS GOD:
Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.

-this is your God:
1 Corinthians 8:6
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him.

Years ago when I accepted the Lord things were different I was young and growing and hungry for the Word of God.

As I get older I feel more of the conviction of the Holy Spirit things that never bothered me God is starting to convict me of like the saying goes "the playpen gets smaller" as you serve the Lord.

What does this mean being a christian when you feel like cying all the time and confessing and repenting of your sins? I look forward to the day when I feel joy peace and reassurance once again.

Is this normal as your walk progresses with the Lord?

Thank you for your answers and May the Lord richly bless all of you that post.

The Oscillatory Universe Theory states that the universe undergoes an infinite series of oscillations, each beginning with a big bang and ending with a big crunch. After the big bang, the universe expands for a while before the gravitational attraction of matter causes it to collapse back in and undergo a bounce.
(Quoted from Wikipedia).
If you believe this theory, how would it effect your spirituality?

Thousands of Christians are leaving Sunni/ Shiite strongholds heading to Nineveh. A Pastor was beheaded. A 14 yr old crucified for sharing his beliefs. Women had acid thrown on their faces.

The Iraqi church is under seige, yet the world remains silent.

In Iraq's constitution is protection for people to not be killed for their faith.

The 'Jerusalem prayer team' sent me this information today.

Has anybody else heard anything like this?

Believing in something.... Anything requires faith, right?
faith and hope are together, so does every one have faith in something? And if we all have faith, and we know that there is only one way of truth no matter what we have faith in... We won't admit we are wrong, right? Non believers have faith that there is no God, right? and if its not faith, its hope... right?
Believers of God believe in their way as faith, right?

So, do we all agree that we all have faith in something?
And if u think its not faith, and just fact... Well, isnt that just by opinion? and arent opinions faith based? Because as long as there are different opinions... Everything isn't really a fact? but Faith?
(somebody has to disagree) Its they're Fact by Opinion. based on evidence of another fact of opinion....
So, whats your OPINION?

And readers: Count in ur mind whos perspective is a opinion, or fact.. Even if u do..someone else always Wont.... Know that.. REMEMBER THAT!!

According to both the Bible and Qu'ran, the universe that we know today was created in 6 days. Can't say anything regarding the Bible because I'm a Muslim, but according to the Qu'ran the arabic word is "Ayyaam", that could mean the literal 24 hour day or "a period". So I guess this applies period here.

Anyways, I've checked wikipedia and interesting enough we had 6 periods from the Big Bang to our present day:

Reionization
The first quasars form from gravitational collapse. The intense radiation they emit reionizes the surrounding universe. From this point on, most of the universe is composed of plasma.

Formation of stars
The first stars, most likely Population III stars, form and start the process of turning the light elements that were formed in the Big Bang (hydrogen, helium and lithium) into heavier elements.
