And how has it strengthened your religious beliefs?

The only "depressing" book I've ever read is George Orwell's "1984". And as I do not share in mister Orwell's bleak vision of a socialistic democracy I didn't find the book depressing at all.

Did it strengthen my religious beliefs (or lack thereof)? Not really.

I majored in English. By the time I got my Master's Degree, I'd read more depressing books than any human being should ever have to. I did some serious praying before finals, and I graduated with a straight-A average.

So I guess you can say that those depressing books really did play a part in strengthening my faith, one way or the other.

Well most of the books I read are science or hard SF novels. Certainly I am reading a Sci-fi novel called "Manifold Space" by Stephen Baxter.

As far as relating to my religion, no they are depressing at all. I quite enjoy them, the Old Norse had a great sense of humor. Were do you think I've got my screen name from? It's the title of a poem in the Poetic Edda.

I don't read depressing books. Enough stuff in real life to depress me. When I read a book for enjoyment, it is to lift me up. When I read for work, it is neither depressing nor otherwise. When I read for my own edification, why would I read something depressing?

Chuck Palahniuk's books are usually quite depressing and nihlistic. But I love them.

And he's an atheist just like me.
