I saw this show about Roswell last night and it said that a poll showed that 80% of Americans feel that their religious beliefs would not be affected by the discovery of intelligent life. That number seems very high to me...Aren't there still alot of fundamentalists in our country who insist on following the Bible word for word and take it all literally? The fact that aliens aren't mentioned in the Bible wouldn't do anything? Hard for me to believe when some people still refuse to believe in dinosaurs because they aren't in the book. What about the idea that aliens would either a) have completley different beliefs about higher powers and their own creation~ what if it contradicts ours? what if they're similar?do you think people would embrace their ideas? or b) they have evolved past the point of religion and have their existence fully understood, so there are no more questions.

What if they had answers about our existence, and it had nothing to with God, would religions believe it?

There are a lot of stuff out there that is nothing more than a joke to some. But to other's they're ways of life. To some, they are a religion. What are the differences between them all? IF you know of something, please answer.

Anything we call supernatural may have an adaptation we don't know about.

There are two extremes, materialism and spiritualism. I believe material and spiritual are two sides on the same coin and they cannot exist seperate from one another.

So here's the ultimate question, since it seems to be such a big priority in the Muslim world:

Why is alcohol haraam in Islam?
Besides the fact that it's stated in the Quran that wine is haraam, and since we're in the spirit of questioning things here, what is the logical reason for alcohol to be haraam?

A few of the reasons given by people are:

"It makes one lose control" Not entirely true. Alcohol does not make you lose control, an excess of alcohol does. Anger also makes one lose control, yet anger is not illegal in most Muslim countries. Eating too much paracetemol can make one lose control. Lust makes one lose control. Driving fast does too. So why does alcohol get the bad rep?

"Alcohol is hazardous to your health" Again, not entirely true. Yes, an excess of alcohol can lead to many harmful conditions, but a glass of wine a day is commonly believed to be beneficial to your body, due to its rich content of antioxidants. People in many European countries drink a lot more alcohol than people in many Muslim countries do, yet they live longer and healthier lives. But even if we were to say that alcohol is bad for you, why isn't beef haraam? Or ghee? Or fat?

"It alters the state of your mind" So do tobacco, caffeine, and antidepressants, yet these aren't haraam (at least in most circles). The world's most common drug is tea. The Ismaili Hasashin were a pretty important sect in Islam which allowed their soldiers to get high on hashish before a mission (that's where the word "assassin" comes from). Dervish dancers and malangs alter their state of mind by dancing in a frenzy.

Why do people who drink get judged more than people who steal? What exactly is the reason for alcohol to be haraam; what does it solve?

the soul's existence depends on spirit or breath. If you're not breathing it, you're a dead soul. When your brain is deprived of oxygen, the mind (the soul's core) slowly turns off and you might hallucinate and when revived you'll think you went somewhere. To really go somewhere, Christ must come and resurrect us. Angels can also can often take the form humans or can show visions of real humans and demons can tamper with them to decieve. Thus the origin of ghosts.

The soul was translated from the words nephesh and psuche which both refer to self, the person, the mind, the body, etc. The spirit is translated from words like neshama (breath), ruach (spirit), and pneuma (breath). The soul (the person) needs the spirit of life (or breath) to live.

Source(s):

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath (neshama) of life; and man became a living soul (nephesh).

in other words:
Body + spirit (unconscious breath) =

...Feel in awe and ecstatic over the world without a God, and science?

I'm okay with both sides, though I get a tad fired up sometimes, but I don't understand conversion... Why do it if someone is just as happy with their beliefs as you are with yours? There are many different convictions about religion, and about ethics, and no one theory/belief can be proved right (well maybe eschatologically, but not in our lives anyway.)

In Mark: chap 5: 1-18 it speaks of a man possesed by Legion (many spirits) that could not be bound he screamed and tore his clothes off and CUT himself all over..Is this the same spirit that makes people cut themselves no a days??
