Could it be because the world hated and crucified Jesus, and because we are followers of Jesus the world hates us, too? For, as it says in the bible, no servant is greater than their master.
In America, it's not so much physical violence, but it's constant public insults, mockery, ridicule, and censorship of public expression of our religion.
But in other parts of the world Christians are even killed for being Christian. This happens routinely in Africa, Central and South America, many parts of Asia (3 teen Christian school girls were beheaded for being Christian in Indonesia), and India.
