We all know the sun takes 365 days to revolve around the sun.
We also know the moon takes about 29 days to do the same around the earth.
If we divide 365 between 29, we get a little more than 12 circles, and we know those cycles as months.
To have an integer numbers relation, those circles were adjusted to last an average of 30 days, and that's how we came to have the calendar as we know it today.
The sky was divided in quadrants in accordance to the 12 divisions of the above circles, and it was found that the time of the year could be defined by observing in which of those quadrants the sun was.
Instead of naming those quadrants with numbers, people decided to refer to them in a way that would describe whatever was happening on their surroundings.
Therefore, the first quadrant, where everything starts growing abruptly and recklessly was called Aries, which means ram. An animal that behaves abruptly and recklessly. The second quadrant was identified with work and strength, the seeding time, and the bull was the animal that represented this. The rest of those quadrants were identified and named accordingly.
The word Zodiac actually means "circle of animals", and it refers to 12 quadrants in the sky (each with an arc of 30 degrees) that describes something that happens in nature in the northern hemisphere.
Applying this to people, the changes in weather and duration of daylight have an effect on our mood. We don't feel the same in spring than in winter, and we actually act accordingly.
How all this affect us deserves a deeper analysis, but for the matter of your question, the answer is yes, they mean something, and this has to do with the way we perceive our world and, in accordance, behave.
We didn't have a rational thinking at the time, but our first contact with the world (when we were born) was very important for us in order to determine how it was.
Very roughly, a person who was born in the middle of winter had a first impression that the world was a cold and hostile place to be, while someone who was born in the end of spring perceived it as a very pleasant place.
And in some way, this affects the way we behave in our latter life.
Something that can be described with a symbol.
Naturally taken from the ones used in the cycle of animals.

Zodiac signs are a generalization in my opinion. However, I do believe in Astrology and the Zodiac signs if charts are drawn up for INDIVIDUAL people. I feel it not appropriate to generalize people into a star sign.So many other contributing factors make up the unique YOU when it comes to the signs. To read your zodiac or star sign daily is ok, it should give you a warm bubbly feeling for the minute, then forgotten the next. By the way Choc 1, Happy Birthday! I am so not going to even yuess your age as I suck badly at that, nd I also fear ramifications, LOL!

Are zodiacs true? There is no true answer to that. A lot of times there are going to be different assumptions by different writters, who infact maybe telling the truth of what knowledge and facts they know, and some may be false. No one is really sure 100%. It's all a mystery. Like god, religion, legends, myths, miracles. All things you'd pretty much say "I'll believe it when I see it.".

I used to be TOTALLY into it. Then I fell in love with my now husband. I'm a pisces and he's leo. Apparently that's a bad match. I stopped being into astrology because we are a perfect match and have been together for 7 years!

It is if you believe it is. Experiment: Go to yahoo astrology, check your horoscope every day for a couple of weeks, and at the end of the day compare what your horoscope said with what actually happens in your life that day and see what you think.
