I realize not everyone is an accurate typist and may type slowly, but some of the abbreviated words that are used online is just ridiculous. I have seen the younger people use them in everyday communications outside of the Internet, and even in essays and term papers they write for school.
Some of it is ok, but come on ....you have to type "hu" instead of "who" or "wud" instead of "would", and so on?
My son's 6th grade teacher gives out spelling words that my 2nd grader can spell, yet a lot of 6th graders can't. Probably because they have forgotten how since they do not use proper spelling when communicating.
I think it is slaughtering the English language. What do you think?

How do you say:

- "You have quite a knack for rescuing our relationship from total ruin just in the nick of time."

- "What the hell?!?!?" (If you are taken by surprise by something unexpected, not in a good way - but nothing serious, something small.)

Thank you!

I am a Russian lady, but I am fascinated with everything English, especially the language ;-) I know that dry humour is a typically British thing, so can you please write some examples of it here? Very much appreciated!

Every other person is either making spelling mistakes that are actually painful to my eyes, or using grammar that's pretty much foreign to every language.

Who here actually can spell the words in their own language, and use them properly? Me! Anyone else?? :)

My grandfather comes from a rural part of Lancashire and still speaks with a traditionally rhotic accent.
But I have never been to Lancashire and have only heard a few other Lancashirites speak, and they all seem to to have non-rhotic accents.
So the question is, are there two types of Lancashire accents spoken in different parts? Or is the rhotic accent of Lancashire now extinct, replaced by a non-rhotic one?

The phrase is: "From Darkness to Light."

Although it seems quite obvious, it may be necessary to clarify the connotations associated with the words "darkness" and "light." These do NOT imply color or any similar meanings. They DO, however, refer to symbolic darkness and light: blindness to sight; ignorance to comprehension; the naiveté of youth to the maturity of experience; obscurity to enlightenment; etc. Any help is most appreciated.
