Lol, I think that it be more of a Sarcastic thing, but lets say you were doing hard work outside in the sweltering heat, and your buddy is sitting in a lawn chair with a cooler, and he says your doing a good job man keep up the good work.Or he helps you for like only 1 second and sits back down. You'd say Oh Yea Thanks you've helped alot. But to get the sarcasticniss out you gotta have it in your voice.

in denmark people use "thank you" a lot (a nice short word - tak)
but they don't have a word for "please" - they have polite expressions but not the word itself ... and when they are rude, you'll get the message across even if they say 17 thank you's, on the other hand, i'm all for honesty ... i'd rather hear one honest thank you that 20 fake ones

Well, I'd say yes, at times a thank you IS apropriate if someone did something for you to be nice, even if you don't actually appreciate what they did.
