There are different ways that this is done. One is using character strokes with a special keyboard.

The more widely used method though involves the use of "pinyin" which is a phonetic system - like a Chinese alphabet using "English/Roman" letters. So with this system you can use a "regular" keyboard and just type letters. Sometimes one word using pinyin might have more than one corresponding character. In that case you can select the correct one using the mouse or by pressing a number to select from a numbered list of characters.

I have lived in China for more than one year, and I can tell you that the "pinyin" system is used almost exclusively here - with computers, on mobile phones for text messaging etc etc.

If you have any questions about China/Chinese in general then you can have a look at my website's forum. There are some English speaking Chinese students who often use it among others. The url is www.daxueyingyu.com/forum

I'm not sure, but I do know that Chinese characters are made up of the same few dozen strokes, just placed differently. Maybe they type the words by the stroke rather than by the whole character.

They have basic sounds on the keyboard. You type the sounds and select the character you want for the word you mean. It's not as difficult as it sounds. The Japanese do it and probably it is the same for Koreans, Taiwanese, etc. and so forth.

They don't use keyboards over there anymore. They just hook the computers right into their brains, like in the Matrix.

The symbols represent syllables, not words.
