As a linguist it's a pet peeve of mine. Both on the net and in text messaging, but especially the former. I will never stoop to saying: sup, hu, wut, or any other misspelling.
However, I think acronyms are great. ROTFL (I prefer that to the newer LMAO), BTW, WTF, IMO, GMTA, etc. are all kind of useful.
And even though "prescriptive" linguistics is considered un-PC, I still think that yes, there is a WAY to speak this great language of ours and destroying it is not "progress," despite what PC academicians say.

I have to agree. I find the butchery of the language to be a constant source of aggravation for me. It isn't only on-line it is also in ads, television, magazines. If I see "O RLY?" one more time in print I may have to go spastic.
I am a bit of a stickler for complete words and sentences; although like most Yankees (those who live in the US and not just No. America) I am an acronym fetishist and so I use TTYL and IIRC and similar shortcuts to represent phrases that take too long to type out.
Even here on Y!A I find myself often getting 2nd or 3rd (or 9th) answer over folks who type 'No' and fire it off before I have composed a thoughtful reply.

English is an exciting language because it adapts so easily! I have no problem with the "shorthand" as long as my kids can prove to me that they are able to write "standard" English as well. And, so far, their grades and letters home show that I've taught them well in that regard. It's yet another phase our language is experiencing, and I embrace it!

I teach on-line (some courses) and I have to remind students that Internet language is not allowed in the course room. I do use some abbreviations in here but for an acronyms not real words. The one that really bothers me is wut for what. ARGH.

Oh my God, thank you for saying that. I just hate it, wouldn't it be just as fast and easy to type the actual word?
I think it looks so unintelligent.

I agree. I feel guilty if I even use "u" for "you" once in a while!

Yes it makes you feel so stupid to have to ask what does WTF mean. I was chatting with a woman who constantly referred to her husband as my h. His name was Bob......that's only two more letters than h. It does get annoying...you are so right................
