I'm reading 'Doctor Zhivago', and I find it really interesting (or should that be confusing?) that each character seems to have several names- a personal name, and a surname, and then another name like a surname that comes from the father... or something.

So, how does this Russian naming system work? Does it persist to this day, or has it been simplified?

I'm planning onstudying to be a teacher for the deaf or a speach path when I'm in college. If I could go ahead and learn the language it would help me a lot. I already have the basic book. I'm looking for a dictionary that will be easy to learn from, and/or a book on grammar. Thanks.

Hi. I am interpreting a novel but so many barriers are blocking me not go go forward. I need your help.

------------->

it no longer annoyed me to be talked to this way. Its heartiness rang false to me, that was all. Once by myself, I got up, closed the shutters. There were times when it did me good to be submissive. I scrubbed my face with the damp corner of a towel. I shook a little brillaintine on my hair. From the top shelf of the mirrored armoire I took down the spirit lamp, the teapot, the cups. Then I lit another cigarette.
"That 's very good. You've done something positive."
she tole me on her return.

-------------->

I just have tree question.

1. What does " It heartiness rang falst to me" means?

2. what is a brilliantine? Is it a wax or mousse?

3. In the last sentence, it says " she told me on her return"
What does it means? she is going back to somewhere? or she is answering to sb?

Please help me out..

babynames.com tells me that Jennifer is Welsch, and yet my Latin teacher tells us that the "fer" comes from the same root as "christopher" in the sense of a protector, and then the "jenni" comes from "gens, gentis", meaning "clan, race, nation".

So does Jennifer mean Protectoress of the Clan, or White Wave (Welsch)?

No irony in his voice. No display of false pity. Decidedly, in this year 1938 a truce was in effect in men's affairs. Failure in life, which for so long had seemed to me like a sort of dishonor, no longer had the same importnace. becaue of the political events that were having their impact upon all of us, we no longer felt ashamed at not having got anywhere. Never a at this moment had I felt this comforthing sensation that comes from the equality of all in the face of danger.

All I want to know is to understand third and last sentence.
I have no idea how I could interpret them. Please help me.
