Christian churches are usually built in a way that the sanctuary is in the easternmost part of the church. When a church isn't planned this way, how do I say it, like "This church is not oriented in the east-west direction?" English is not my mother tongue so I'm really lost right now.

Feeling totally lost and idiotic.

I'm specifically talking about people in France.

If it is true, why do so many French they still have the ability to converse in English well?

Should we have a proscriptive institution "cleaning, fixing, and giving splendor" to the English language, like the Real Academia Española is supposed to do for Spanish? Why or why not? What would the purpose be? Would English speakers respect the language more if we did?

It seems that people either completely refuse to use curse words, for fear that their uttering these sounds will open a giant hole in the Earth or something... or otherwise, they use them so often that the words lose all meaning.

I like to pepper my speech with curse words every now and then, though I know when it's appropriate and when it's not, and it often seems that I'm the odd one out.

So, what's the reasoning behind the people that refuse to ever use curse words? And behind those that use them at least twice per sentence? Your thoughts on the matter?

If English isn't your native language, does the use of profanity or vulgar words seem to fit into these two extremes in your native language?

Ideally, it's best to immerse one's self in a situation where you either learn to speak the language or you starve to death.. lol You pick it up very quickly. But my options are fairly limited in this respect, living where I do. Is there a voice recognition software that teaches you to properly pronounce words, and "converse" fluidly and easily in other languages? I would LOVE to find something like this.

My dad would like to know if his name is spelled different in different languages or if they have there own version of the name James. Online translators seem to think his name says Jams and bring up the word for marmalade instead.

Us Americans are often criticized, especially by Europeans, for not making an effort to learn languages other than English. My theory on this is that geographically, we are too far apart from Europe for it to really matter. It just isn't practical as an American to learn a new language (Unless you travel a lot, and Spanish being an exception). Europeans border countries who speak many languages, so it is practical for them to learn them. I personally would like to learn a 2nd, or even third language, but I don't think the criticism directed towards Americans is really fair. What are your thoughts?
