It seems that people either completely refuse to use curse words, for fear that their uttering these sounds will open a giant hole in the Earth or something... or otherwise, they use them so often that the words lose all meaning.

I like to pepper my speech with curse words every now and then, though I know when it's appropriate and when it's not, and it often seems that I'm the odd one out.

So, what's the reasoning behind the people that refuse to ever use curse words? And behind those that use them at least twice per sentence? Your thoughts on the matter?

If English isn't your native language, does the use of profanity or vulgar words seem to fit into these two extremes in your native language?

I use curse words and I consider myself fairly educated, as I'm working on a PhD at the moment. I also consider myself to be a very good user of English, with a pretty decently sized vocabulary. You really can't judge people on their use of a few certain words. Sometimes they just fit in the situation better than others.

it is like the little boy that is either very very good or very very bad. those who never swear are completely turned off by swearing and it leaves a bad taste in their mouths literally. they cringe. those who swear every word,... are usually those with limited vocabulary... or are unable to express their feelings in any other way. some movies.. i have started watching have curse words every other sentence..and seem to use the curse word inappropriately or when another word would surffice. i have to turn it off... it gets soooooooo rediculous. personally i believe the bible only mentions one curse word..that is forbidden and that is using GODS name in vain. i think it isnt the word ..it is how it is used, the meaning behind it. you can call a friend a ***** and it comes out cute..and you both laugh..but you can be in a fight and call a guy one...or your girlfriend or wife one and it is filled with meaness.as with anything in life MODERATION is the key.

I believe in moderation, when it comes to just about anything.

I think a bit of profanity is a very useful tool sometimes, to emphasize certain phrases. But it's important to be careful where you are and who you're talking to.

I get kind of annoyed at people who wear their "I DON'T CUSS" badges all the time. If somebody utters a bad word, this person sits there with a nasty look on their face, and everybody in the room looks at them like we should all apologize for offending them. What makes them any better than anybody else?

On the other hand, nothing is worse than a person who just peppers every phrase with f'in this and mf'in that. Sick!

You're right, it should not go to extreme. Let's all be more understanding when somebody slips... and let's try not to overdo the swearing, OK?

The thing is that whether you think these words are used too much or too little is based on your perception of what the appropriate amount of cursing is. An amount that you think is too extreme might be just the right amount for another person. You're trying to make something objective out of something subjective.

People who speak with cuss words are uneducated. Their are more creative words in the English language (check a dictionary) then the ones they use.

I am one who overuses it and makes it meaningless. It has just become part of everyday language, nothing can be done, it just depends on the person.
