Christian churches are usually built in a way that the sanctuary is in the easternmost part of the church. When a church isn't planned this way, how do I say it, like "This church is not oriented in the east-west direction?" English is not my mother tongue so I'm really lost right now.

Feeling totally lost and idiotic.

You did well Pilar - you are correct.

To locate or position so as to face the east.
To build (a church) with the nave laid out in an east-west direction and the main altar usually at the eastern end.

Personally, I agree with Ballyhoo.

However, if you DO use your phrase "This church is not oriented in the east-west direction," I have to point out that if you say it to someone who speaks British English you will need to say 'orientated' instead of 'oriented'. Oriented is a simplified, shortened way of saying it, and only Americans will know what the heck you're talking about...!

I would think the first way you explained it would make sense to me by just repeating it...

"The sanctuary of the church is not in the easternmost part of the building. From my experience, typically the sanctuary is directed east in the building."

?? Just a guess... : )

That sentence sounds fine to me. But I think it might be a bit more explanatory if you said, "This church is not oriented in the traditional east-west direction."

Pilar, I have to research the east orientation for the sanctuary. But assuming you are correct, then you have stated it correctly: "This church is not oriented in the east-west direction."

I would add the word 'correct.' "This church is not oriented in the correct east-west direction." or: "This church is not in the correct east-west orientation."

I hope that helped.
