I've currently had a year of college German, and I'd like to find some texts that I can read, understand, practice, and learn from. I browse Der Spiegel, but there's just too much vocabulary that I don't know. I've also browsed around german.about.com, but haven't found all that much.

It seems like I could certainly find something on gutenberg.spiegel.de but I don't know enough about German authors to know where to look.

Suggestions? (For sites, authors, or books)

Unlike the English language, words in my language are pronounced as they are written.

How do you separate syllables in a word?
What exactly is strees?
How do you know which syllabe in a word is stressed?
Are there any rules for stress?

Are "to have a special liking for something" 她 就 特 別 喜 歡 金 頭 髮 的 人 and to be fond of something 愛 好 the same? Is 愛 好 expressed in a more negative manner?
For example, if a man said 我 愛 好 女 人, would he sound like a horny man?

My first langage is Japanese.

Situation:
score of boarder is 70 and I scored 75 on the examination.

What is natural expression in this situation?

I could pass the examination.
I was able to pass the examination.

My grammer book says: the first one is not correct. and the second one is correct in grammer.

I understood the difference of be able to and Can, but I guess we should say just:
I passed the exmamination.
I was able to pass the examination: is not natural.
What do you think?

I want to be fluent in ASL. I know some signs but how do you get from memorizing tons of signs to being able to just speak with your hands and not have to think about it so much or look up signs. Where do I start?

This phrase is used for karate weapon form/kata. I understand the koshiki is a "traditional" word, but I'm not sure if there is a meaning for the complete phrase.

I am looking for a good male Arabic name for my soon to be son..he is half-arab, half-american.. I would prefer something a little unusual but easy to pronounce. (No offense, but Muhammed, Mahmoud, Ahmed and their derivatives are nice names, but a little too common..) Any suggestions?
