I want to be fluent in ASL. I know some signs but how do you get from memorizing tons of signs to being able to just speak with your hands and not have to think about it so much or look up signs. Where do I start?

I've been signing since I was 8 years old, (I'm 39). My family and I took a workshop at a community college because my parents thought it would be educational and fun. My three sisters and I would sign to each other and that helped us to learn to just speak with our hands. We used books to help with words that we didn't know.
Later on, we had friends that were deaf and that helped to expand our vocabulary.
One of my sisters is now an ASL translator.
Look in your community for workshops or even be a volunteer at a camp for deaf children.

I know ASL. I learned many years ago in DC. I use to work at Gallaudet College for the Deaf. Look them up on web site. I had to take classes there. I become a Secretary/Interpreter. I would interpret for my deaf boss (tours of the school, phone calls, and meetings.) It was very rewarding. I loved it and miss it alot. I have a book called "The Joy of Signing" by Lottie L. Riekehof. Try to find it in a book store. It has tons of signs in it. It is a ASL text book. You will learn alot from it.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! There are groups out there who meet and sign to each other. I would start by seeking out a class in a community college and meeting others who want to sign fluently...Good Luck!
