Right now I am at an upper intermediate level in Japanese (speaking, reading, listening, etc). I've been learning for 7yrs.

Yes I am an English teacher (which makes it difficult to really progress that much in Japanese as I've got few chances to speak Japn). At any eikaiwa school you are prohibited from practicing Japanese with the students.....that's standard.

So I make it my rule to speak no English outside of work/weekends.

But I always come across Japn people who refuse to reply/ speak Japanese to me. I don't mind sharing, speaking some English and some Japanese, but most people I come across are just language bullies. It is annoying. They speak only English (even if they are low level speakers).

I can understand a Japn student living in Canada wanting to practice English...in that case, I feel I should speak English to them there. But they want to speak only Eng to me over in Japan too?

When is it OUR turn to converse in Japanese?

i'm a german major, and i'd like to improve my german speaking skills by immersing myself in two of these countries (one in the winter, one in the following spring). i definitely want to do germany, but which part and when? i'm really interested in a program that offers placements at these specific institutions (see http://www.isep.org/nus/germany/index.html). between austria (http://www.isep.org/nus/austria/index.html) and switzerland (http://www.isep.org/nus/switzerl/index.html), i'm ever so slightly leaning toward austria. i listened to a swiss german conversation...and it was something. it's very interesting, but i don't think it'll help with my "high german" learning.

i only put up the links in case you are familiar with any of those schools.
i'm hoping to get some answers from people who have actually lived or studied in/at any of these countries/cities/universities.

"when they are grown up"

In this following sentence:

The support given for the orphans will not diminish the role of fostering family in raising the orphans, but the fostering family is not entitled to the grants given to the children who are adopted when they are grown up.
