It would depend on what you want to learn it for. In general, it might be a good thing to learn how to ask in THAT language, if they know how to speak in YOUR language. But when I try to learn something about a new language, I tend to go first to general structural aspects, like what are plural forms like, or how I conjugate the verbs, etc. And I gain some vocabulary as I try to understand those things...
