I've currently had a year of college German, and I'd like to find some texts that I can read, understand, practice, and learn from. I browse Der Spiegel, but there's just too much vocabulary that I don't know. I've also browsed around german.about.com, but haven't found all that much.

It seems like I could certainly find something on gutenberg.spiegel.de but I don't know enough about German authors to know where to look.

Suggestions? (For sites, authors, or books)

Try this one. I gave you the page with some literary texts, but this is a good website to start learning and practicing. It's a website specifically for people who are looking to learn German and it gives you real information in easily readable and understandable form. Browse around. Der Spiegel is definitely too advanced for a 100 or 200 level college German.

Viel Spass :-)

I dont know much about German, but to practice reading spanish, i rent spanish book for kids at montréal's great library. To practice my hearing i download simpson's episodes in spanish. it might sound silly, but that part of how i learned english.. back in the days :P find something you like and its going to be fine and fun.

but i think childrens books (or adult short stories) are a very good way to learn. put the book in your bathroom and everytime, learn a little bit more :P
