I first learned in MS and HS, then majored in French Lit in college, then moved to Paris to go to school. I now teach it.

You could take a class at school, learn it online at:

www.aboutfrench.com-it's free and gives you some good cultural info;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french/index.shtml is another good website (not sure if you have to pay anything after a few lessons)

Play around on Yahoo France to work on reading skills: http://fr.yahoo.com/index_narrow.html Check out French music videos to get an idea of what they listen to.

Rent French movies to understand the culture better. One of my (and my students' faves) is The Dinner Game (dîner des cons). Brotherhood of the Wolf is a French "historical" horror film, Indochine is a good romance-drama: just see what the store has and check it out. If you watch the DVDs, you can watch it in French with French subtitles (you can also do the same with any Disney DVD you own).

You can visit Quebec-it's closer (if you live in the US or Canada) and although the accent and vocab. can be different, you can learn to speak it fluently.

Look for a epal: a "pen pal" via the Internet who can help you learn.

I do recommend Rosetta Stone, but it's expensive.

You can also try Power Glide's i-combo course: you can get HS credit for taking their program (interactive and great way to learn) http://www.power-glide.com/icombo/power_glide_order.asp (also expensive, but it gets you HS credit)

Bonne chance! (Good luck) :-)

First of all , try to listen to their music. When you will really fall in love with, you are ready to learn the language. From now on everything will be very easy.
This is the way how I advised my daughter to do and it has worked very well.
