Am sending a picture of a cat inside a pool table (!) to the hotel before we go there in August. I speak no Greek except 'efharisto' and 'parakolo'! Will write the letter in English but would like to add this one phrase in Greek (or Cretan, if there is a 'local' way of saying things).

If it possible to put it in the reply, I would like it in Greek characters as well as an 'english' version (I am sure they do not spell the words phonetically!)

Thanks!

Would you consider a person truly fluent if he still carried the accent of his mother tongue?

I have a beerglass with a cartoon and "Stammtisch der Bettshöner." It's a bunch of guys around a table drinking and one of them is thinking about his wife waiting up for him in bed. I know what a Stammtisch is but what does Bettshöner exactly mean?

right, in American English it means do you believe it's real. The question was about confusion caused by speaking the same language, with different meanings, I was wondering if there were other examples.

Just to stir a bit, we invented it, so our version has got to be correct? Right?

And yes I'm from the UK!

What are the steps to learning Italian? I'm sure learning the alphabet would be the first step, but what would the steps be after that? Thanks so much!

not do you believe it exists. It's perfectly good english, if you're English. I wonder how much more confusion is caused on here by similar misunderstandings, any other examples.........?

I was born and raised in the U.S. I am a proud American but I am also proud of my telugu roots. My folks neglected to make sure we really learned telugu. I understand my parents and other people to an extent, everyday talking but I would really like to be fluent. Is anybody out there willing to lead me in the right direction?

i am not quite clear about the saying:'when do you need it by?'--it means: How much time do you need to complete that job? -or- when do you need the job done? Anyway, I am trying to find a delight way to ask my boss the deadline…any suggestions?
