CIAO is a "jolly" greeting...
It's the english for "Hi" or "Hello", but also for "Bye bye"...
It's very friendly, so it's used with people you know (your friends, your relatives)... at every time!
SALVE means "Hi", but it's less confident than "Ciao" and it's used with people you know, but not very well (for example your baker...). Buongiorno or Buonasera are more used than Salve...
ARRIVEDERCI is "bye bye" and it's polite... used in the streets, in the shops...
BUONGIORNO (or buon giorno) means "good day" and it's used in the morning (we don't say "good morning") and in the afternoon...
BUONASERA (or buona sera) is "good evening", used
in the evening...
BUONANOTTE (or buona notte) is "good night"... when you go bed...

Salve is more or less like 'Hi!', so keep it for people you know reasonably well. 'Ciao!' is also informal, so the same rule applies. Arriverderci is for people you DON'T know, so, in shops, buses, post offices, and to be respectful to people older than you.
Buona sera is 'good evening' - just to be polite. Buona notte is before you go to bed.

'salve' and 'ciao' are the same but 'ciao' is more commonly used. i guess 'salve' i archaic. 'arrivederci' means 'see you'.it is formal but used when leave-taking. 'buonasera' is when you visit someone in the evening and 'buonanotte' is when you bid them goodnight.

Ciao will cover all these situations, Italians are usually not so formal.
