Christmas - October 2006

[Selected]: All categories Society & Culture Holidays Christmas

It seems to me that Americans have lost sight of the true meaning of Christmas and that is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the savior of all mankind. I do not understand how people can celebrate this day, if they do not believe in Christ. This is not a bashing for non-Christians and I am not trying to argue over the existence of Jesus. I just want to understand how and why people celebrate this holiday.

Sofar the only thing I have seen this year is a mattress store that is having a coat drive. But they only accept brand new coats. I have not found any place yet, if at all, that accepts used ones.

I know I could donate them to a thrift store (Goodwill, etc) but I would rather have them in the hands of someone who couldn't afford anything like that as opposed to them buying one. At least where I live, what you find brand new at Walmart or Target is cheaper than the prices the thrift stores charge for used clothing and merchandise, which is insane I know.

I can't say i hate christmas but it does seem like a waste of time. It's meant to be about giving and sharing but all it's about these days is drink driving and running up tons of credit card debt.

What happened to the saying it's the thought that counts? It's all got too commercialised and we mugs (parents) fall for it every year getting more and more in debt just to please our kids who already get too much as it is. I can feel the stress already - lol!

I am a supervisor in a cubicle-world setting with seven people reporting to me. Every year I manage to get pretty decent Christmas gifts for them for around $10-$15 each, but I just feel like I have done everything over the past few holidays. They all range in age from 20's to late 30's and I don't want to break my bank. Alcohol is out of the question. I've done various gift cards too, but feel like I've worn that out. Any thoughts?

I have almost all of her gifts purchased; however, I am at a loss, except for small books, as to what to put into her stocking. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

I am tired of people saying holiday candy, holiday card, etc instead of saying Christmas. It has always been Christmas and you don't have to be religious to call it that. Every says it is because of New years being right after it but still everyone still says New years. I don't care if I offend someone with Christmas and if if bothers them, they should go somewhere else.

We would like to keep the budget as small as possible. We have done the cookie-thing. We have made individual gifts (expensive). Any ideas would be appreciated.

In the book of Jeremiah, God specifically tells his people to avoid all aspects of Yule, the decorated tree is mentioned in detail, as it is pagan and thus evil. The majority of modern Christians profess to follow everything in the Bible as what they are to follow as well. So based on that, why do Christians have a Christmas tree if they know if it is pagan? Or do they even realize that is the case? Why if it was not acceptable back then is it perfectly fine today? God himself also said that he does not change ever so that would mean that either he wasn't telling the truth when he ordered his people to avoid those, or Christians have misinterpreted the Bible.

who agrees with me that kids should ask how santa is and how are his reindeer and things instead of just asking for toys right away?

I'd like your opinion on this....I've seen kids break down after finding out Father Christmas isn't real and my question is this...why would we tell a lie to our children that will break their hearts when they discover it isn't true? We will teach her not to tell other children, but we will be teaching her that Father Christmas is not real. Surely they don't need to believe in him to have a good Christmas??
