I'm from S.E.Asia living in the US for the past 10 years. Recently I made friends with a lady in my apartment. Her son became close friends with my son and played every evening with him, more than with any other kids. Last week was the kid's birthday and they had a pool party. The mother had invited only neighbors who were "white". She left us and another African American kid out from the list. I felt very offended. I still see that lady outside everyday. Do I still move with her as if nothing happened. Pl. advise me.

A couple that I know very well hasn't been on speaking terms with me ever since I told them that I could not watch their 2 kids every Saturday and Sunday. I used to be their regular babysitter until it was needed for me to get a job with higher pay to help pay some bills and supplement my husband's income. Now weekends are the only time I get to spend with my kids and my husband so I really don't want to be spending that time babysitting all day long. I actually just quit a second part-time job that I was doing on weekends, to help lower my blood pressure, de-stress and spend time with family. Then this couple we know finds me at church and asks me to babysit every Sat. and Sun. I put it in the nicest way that I couldn't do it and now they don't speak to us anymore. When they walk past me in church they don't look me in the eye and don't say anything when I greet them. They act very snide now even when my husband tries to talk to them.

A former student of mine has included me on a group mailing list asking for prayers and financial support for her missionary group that's going to Russia to work with youth in a sports camp/Bible study group. No doubt the sports activities will be fun for the Russians, but there's no mention of building houses, feeding the hungry, or otherwise helping the poor. The primary purpose of the mission is to "open the hearts of the people" & to connect with God in a new and intimate setting".

While I have no problem with people sharing their religious views with willing listeners or with followers of a particular religion renewing their belief in God, I'd rather help out a charity that makes a more concrete contribution to people's lives. I only earn $15,000 a year as an adjunct professor at a university & can't afford to sponsor anyone taking an overseas trip for their own spiritual enrichment.

Should I make a token contribution anyway? If not, how should I respond?

We set them up and ask questions like "Do I look fat in this dress" and then tell them to be honest and then get made at them for their honesty. I found a man that does answer fairly but does not allow me the discomfort of being too brutal. I like a man that can talk/comfort. Anyone else !!!!

Do you look at their mouths, their eyes, nose? Or maybe something else? And does it depend on who you are speaking to?

Under normal circumstances I know I pick up the tab!

But what if I'm flying halfway across the world to see her? I pay for plane ticket and dinner too?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not cheap!...but I'm not rich either.

One of my friends is a natural born speed reader, who can finish a 300 page book in less then an hour. My reading speed is slower then average, and I get very tired after having finished 20 pages of a book.

Every birthday and Christmas this "friend" always gives me a brand new book that he took the liberty of reading before he wrapped it. Not only do I think this is tacky, but also very selfish on his part, because he got the benefit of the "gift" and then dumped it off on me. I have told him many times that my reading speed is nowhere near his, have hinted for other gifts, and even had my wife one time tell him what to get me to try to break him of this habit, but he refuses to get the message.

My birthday is next week, and I am seriously thinking of not accepting the book I know he is going to try to dump off on me. I hate to hurt his feelings, but I don't appreciate his "selfish" gift giving. Would this be inappropriate on my part?

I hear it all the time: kids (that is, anyone under 18, or not living independently) calling adults by their first names. I have even had guests in my house instruct their children to call me by my first name (and then grin and ask, "that's ok, isn't it?") right in front of me.

I won't waste your time telling you how unacceptable this is to me (it involves a complex system of manners that is no longer taught, and you might not be familiar with it), but I *will* ask if you have any suggestions to make it stop...short of slapping anyone, that is.

Thanks for any insight you can give me; it's appreciated.

Thought i'd give you my opinion first this time. words are just words. i don't believe there are bad ones. i think actions are a bajillion fold times more important to focus on and teach my children than not saying a cuss word. or anything that's contraversial really. why not push the envelope, stir some minds, and jump in and out of the box?
