hello is much more formal. after you've been around a person 4 or 5 times, then hi is fine.

hello to be formal. I always say hi tho.....sometimes I say hello in a brittish accent if im feeling good that day lol

This is random, but the word hello didn't come about until the invention of the telephone. They needed a word to initiate conversation.
