I have always wondered that. It makes more sense to say "left a dump" but we don't say that. The english language is just crazy.

It's because bodily wastes tend to be full of potentially disease-causing organisms. That's why they smell bad to us and we instinctively avoid them. So it's a matter of courtesy to not poop on the path where others walk, nor to leave our 'leftovers' in a bathroom others use.
