I saw a guy on the bus this afternoon, & the bus driver was teasing him with the bus ticket & was trying to pick an argument with him & drove poor dude very mad. & the dude got fresh with me. I felt pity for him. He's kind of cute. I don't mind giving him a shot at dating, & also I'm mentally disabled myself. The guy gave me a hug before he got off the bus. He's one of those types of people who need special attention. I surely don't mind helping him out & showing him that I'm not one of those type of people who would dog over him.

For every seemingly positive their are at least 10 other negative traits as well. And no ,I really do not believe most 'aspies' are pontential Einsteins.I actually think of them as rather stupid in the general I.Q. way too.

Yes, I have a mental illness, but that shouldn't stop me from working, should it? I'm tired of living off of SSI & Social Security all the time. Where is $643/month gonna get me? & they call it a benefit. I'd rather work & make more money. I know plenty of people with mental illnesses who have children & jobs & manage very well. Why does no one want me with children or a job? Yes, I know it's stressful, but I want to be ABLE-not disabled. & people contradict themselves by saying I use my disorders as a crutch or excuse, but they don't want me to live a normal life.

Also, I'm starting school again, & people are trying to talk me out of going to school, telling me I'm not mentally capable.

I'm a low-income, disabled individual who is having difficulty finding an apartment. I'm living in an abusive situation with my brother, & I have no place else to turn to. I start back up with college on Monday, & I'd hate to go to school & live in a homeless shelter at the same time. I get my disability checks tomorrow.

Would it sound like a crazy, nonsensical idea to put all my stuff in storage for $60/month & go live in a battered women's homeless shelter? My brother used to beat on me when I was younger, & I'm afraid he's gonna start back up again because he yells at me for no reason, he's controlling & bossy, he steals from me, & he tries to sucker me out of all of my disability checks so I won't have any money.

Tomorrow (June 1) is the anniversary of Helen Keller's death, which got me thinking about disabities and the Internet. There are already a number of assistive technology devices to help blind and deaf people use computers and access the Internet, but what do you think the future holds?

"devotees?" I've heard the term but don't think I've ever known what they are. Is it something that I should worry about?

For those on this board, how are relationships for you? I am a DAK amputee and I'm finding the dating game rather tough. I'm probably looking in the wrong places and I'm probably working too hard at it.

I mean, look, Im just as guilty. You want the person to not be sad or whatever, so you tell them some fairy tale to shut them up. But what is going to happen when these people find out that the majority of them will end up on the streets or worse? Not only that but the chances of them being taken advantage of robbed, beaten, etc. are far higher than that of their able bodied counterparts? I genuinely fear that at least a few of them may try to physically mutilate random people, am I the only one?

Any C5 quadriplegics (SCI) who use power assist manual wheelchairs or in OT/PT with any knowledge?
If so, I was wondering if they are beneficial for a C5 quad, I am 2 yrs post injury and have always used a powerchair, a straight manual chair so far has not been very practical for me. My issues are I have are zero triceps, no wrist extension, and no hand/finger function. I have heard about the power-assist manual chairs and they look pretty cool. Any advice would be great.

If you cannot / do not work for a living because you have a disability, (particularly if it is a psychological disability) how do you answer when a stranger asks you where you are working & what you do to earn a living?

This question is awkward enough, when inquired by a complete stranger whom one is meeting for the first time. I find it to be even more awkward when asked by an old friend or acquaintance, with whom I have not had any contact with for many, many years.

What is the appropriate way to respond such an inquiry?

I just found this site, I draw SSA disability and usually stay on R&S. I am an American Minister who moved to the Philippines to do both ministry and have a better life with my income.

Since I found this site just now, I have to ask (SERIOUS ANSWERS PLEASE).

Is there any of you who are "true" Christians who are disabled but would like to Minister in some way the word of God in the mission field?

Including slight mental health problems (I am bi-polor, stress on depression)

Doing your own Ministry, (or helping us) paying your own support and living better than you can in the U.S. on your disability income?

If you are and will email me with your questions I will be happy to respond,

I was placed on disability last August and started recieving my benefits in October. I am a former teacher, So it would be VERY difficult for me to get SS or SSI, because I get STRS. It is autoimmune conditions with complications. My bring home was cut to less than 1/2...wasn't expecting that and the insurance isn't near as good. I have been between a rock and a hard place for a very long time. I do not qualify for food stamps either. I am close to banrupcy and can no longer afford to take all my meds. Does anyone know of any loan programs, med sites, etc. for folks in this situation. I am hurting, please let me know if you know of something. Thank you.
