I am working on some artworks for a book, that introduces people to disabilities using animals.
We have some but having new character could be good to.

And I do see people with a disability as people.

how interesting to come up with a question like this,

i would not personally use any animals to represent a disability,

but i have to say, watching the orangutan and the way they use their arms, has helped me with my mobility when i transfer from my wheelchair to my walker, from my bed to my walker.

to understand where i am coming from, i am above the knee amputee and i use my hands to grip on my walker, wheelchair, bed, the handrails in the restrooms, before i pivot in the direction i need to go.

i hope you get an ideal of what i mean.

My assumption is that you may be creating this book for children with disabilities so thay can somehow acknowledge and accept what they are going through.

The first thing I would mention is that all animals are a creation of God and that God does not make mistakes.

With that said you may want to look at aquatic life versus terrain life and show children the differences and limitations that such animals have but more importantly HIGHLIGHT all the positive aspects that these creatures possess and how each is able to overcome certain obstacles, etc.

I am a below-the-knee amputee.

I wouldn't--people with disabilities are PEOPLE, not animals. The suggestion is insulting.
