I explained my mental illness to someone, thinking she was a friend, & she told me that I'm crazy & dumb & need to get some brains. I have a college degree, so how can I be dumb?

Sad to say that some ppl that do not have these problems do not or cannot understand them.
Take my father he said my headaches were just me acting out and after several doctors I found the trouble was cluster migraines.I also have nerve damage that has caused major atrophy in my legs and arms but I cannot afford to go to doctor for test(cost 7500.00)!
I am unable to live a normal life and have been turned down by SSI AND SSD four times saying they have sent me to their doc's and find nothing wrong with me! I use canes to walk and have lost much use of my hands!!
This way it is tough when a person does not know what we feel they say work harder! I have several good friends that tell me this everyday- I kow you can do this job or I know someone that had the same thing and they work or try some other form of work! You see this all the time and we see the users of the system which give us a bad name!

The reason people do this is because they have never suffered from a mental illness themselves. I have suffered from depression and people seem to think it is something I did to myself. That if I had just gone on with my life I would have been OK. I sold my house and my brother wanted me to put it in the bank and ask them to require his signature before I took any money out. There is NO way he would do anything dishonest wtih my money; he just thought since I was suffering from depression I could not use good judgment. I DON'T GET IT. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

As far as physical disabilities, I can't figure out why some people equate that with lack of intelligence.

Anyone who tells you that you are crazy and dumb is NOT a friend. Dump her tacky butt.

I have a physical disability as well as depression, I also have three daughters and they often get asked questions that people should address to me. Like what would I like to eat if we're in a dinner or restaurant. As for my depression people are afraid of something similar happening to them and since they aren't sure how they would deal with it they just react with out thinking. I know that it hurt, but the best thing that I've learned over 52 years is that you can't take other peoples ingnorace as something personal. When my daughters get upset I just tell them that some people don't have the advantage that they had being raised by someone with disabilities who could prove to them that there is intelligence with disabilities.

I have a mental disability too but since mine is social nobody thinks that i have one really but at times it does rear it's head at my part-time job. Just don't let her get to you (I know that it's hard, believe me) as I have an associate's degree and I am at times smarter than one of my friends with a bachelors. She not a friend if she treated you like that. Don't have anything to do with her, she will probably come around thinking that you will just forget her insensitivity but tell her that she will only be welcomed in your life again when she is ready to apologize for her rude and hurtful comments.

its very sad, but you i find that many people just dont understand mental illness until they are faced with it directly, until then you may see ignorance. take for instance tom cruise and his ignorant remarks about mental illness and medication. remember he said that before his wife had their baby. after their baby was born, he asked forgiveness.i don't know if his wife had the baby blues or not, but having even hormonal changes is a small example of how delicate we really are.
wisdom comes with time and experience, and your friend will learn in time. im sorry she hurt your feelings.
i wish you all the best. :)

Because people are simply ignorant. They believe if they can't see something with their own two eyes then it's not there. The person who made that comment to you showed just how ignorant she was by saying such a thing. People can be so cruel and heartless.

Its so hard for people to understand what they weren't taught or what is hard for them to believe because they have closed minds and if they are willing to listen and learn "facts" they would be able to be supportive or at least recognize the truth after being taught the facts. I don't think you should be Friends with someone like that honestly, be associates instead and you should choose your Friends don't let them choose you don't let them make you feel bad, you know? life is hard enough. its just too stressful but if your up for the challenge or whatever you want to call it and "teach her" then do that but also sometimes people don't like to learn new things they think they either know it already or its just foolishness

Because most people think if you part of the disabled community you are automatically dumb, ignorant, and/or retarded.

Across the board in Amerika (I can't speak for other places, really,) mental illness is not taken as seriously as it needs to be. It would "cost too much" if it were, & our corpo-plutocratic rulers certainly can't have any of THAT.
