...is it rude to tell someone to stop talking to them like they're three years old?

They understand every word they hear, while this other person doesnt understand what they see... And they assume things far from the truth, generalizing...

This aggravates me.

What should I do in this situation?

I think this issue belongs here, because it relates to those of us who have a disability.

So, I hear in the news today that the stem cell research has been vetoed a 2nd time. What are your feelings/thoughts on this?? I think this shouldn't happen. We need this research to help those in need. It will do something good for our disabled citizens.

How can we fight through this?

Hi there,

Sorry if I sound ignorant and foolish. I have a child with autism. I know it's different for every child, but I was curious about others on the spectrum. Do you have a driver's license and do you drive?

I am trying to make connection with individuals on the spectrum as I haven't met adults who are on the spectrum.

Thank you for your time and kind support. I wish to pose other questions in future which would require your opinions. Please stay tuned. I'd highly appreciate it if you could kindly take a moment to forward my question to as many people as you know of who are on the spectrum.

Thank you so much!!

I already had my full driver's license. When I moved to Texas, I went to the DMV, & the people told me that I had to start the driving test process ALL over again just because I have a disability.

I work supporting people with developmental disabilities. One practice I use is people first language. I support people with autism, not autistic people. I spend time with people in wheelchairs, I eat lunch with people with Down Syndrome, I talk on the phone to people who are blind. I frequently explain this idea to people who have no clue. They ask me if it really matters, or if I am just being PC.

Does it really matter?

I have only had to say it out loud a few times (well OK, a few dozen times)

But I have shouted it in my mind a thousand times or more.

Am I alone in this? Every time it raises my hackles and it motivates me to do far more than 99% of the able bodied population.

Is there a better way to deal with being told what I can and can't do?

And can you please specify what the disability(s) is that you are thinking about. Like if it's being blind or deaf, being paralyzed or having had lost a limb. Having Down's Syndrome, having Bipolar Disorder, multipersonalities. To name a few. Thank you.

Mine is about a 24 yr old man with Down's Syndrome. He was working at Hardee downtown and & took the city bus every day to work & back home. He was very talkative on the bus to everyone & he knew all the bus routes. He loved to ask anyone where they were going & he could tell them what bus# to take and at what streets to get off at. I was amazed at his memory! The bus driver said he had been taking the bus for 2 yrs on his own after his mother helped him when he was a teen. He was always smiling. There is one day that I'll never forget. He was working at Hardee's and he sweeped the floors, took out the garbage and stocked cups and napkins. He loved it! Well, one day I got on the bus and he was beaming. He got promoted! He was promoted to 'fry guy'. That day he was going to start making fries. And he spend the rest of the trip explaining to us all how he could make fires for us. I got fries that day.

This young man has always made me think before I start complaining.

they used their disabilites to hoard it over everybody around them, because in general that is actually the type of negative person that they have become or have always been or lately have decided to change and just be a real whiny cry a** about every little thing?

For me, I had a (now ex close friend) who almost died when she was a baby...as did her mom..but, it was a heart condition..and her mom had been sick when giving birth,..now, mind you, while I wouldn't want either of those two to pass on..(and they sure didn't, thank God!), but, unfortunately, the daughter who used to be the "close friend" of mine...her atittude got "meaner and just plain ugly!" Her other friends from college would ask me about her attitudes...(I didn't say a word,,,until one day, I finally broke down and told one of them about her nasty bossy attitude..not just towards me, but, her own family, and strangers near by us!) Her mannerisms had gotten meaner and meaner...and VERY manipulative!
what do you think?
