He is fairly advanced with a vocabulary of about 35 words. His word recognition is about 10 words. He loves to play outside and is fairly independent in his play. Very curious, he likes to see how things work but does have a short attention span. Any suggestions on a gift?

With what you have mentioned something including the sciences perhaps a visit to a science museum or something similiar. Or perhaps he would enjoy a tour around the local firestation involves lots of trucks and things that make noises. The people there would not mind showing him around also if you made a special request. If these suggestions do not suit I would think about some kind of physical experiences such as a ride or a day in an adventure park with yourself and/or some of his closest friends. By being constantly engaged his attention span shouldn't be an issue. I can relate I feel like that sometimes too!
Hope that helps Fiona

Get him anything that ANY 7 year old boy would want.
Having Down's syndrome does not make him any less a boy than any other boys.

A human being is a human being - with same feeling, aspiration, dreams, need for love and can give love - regardless of what "syndrome" they may have.

When my son was about 7 (and he has Down syndrome) I got him an electric train. He loved it. Each holiday he would get new things for his train set. It made it easy for people who didn't know what to buy him to just buy new parts for his train. Ideal because it really didn't matter if someone bought the same thing he already had.

but if u'd like something educational.....there are some toys that are like a mini org and yes u can play music on them but they also have all these keys that say words and sentences and songs........
also there are kids laptops that have eucational software installed...they could be more fun for learning than books...well hope that helps

Get something for his just above his mental age not his actual age, if you get something for a child of his physical age it could be too advanced for him. Get him something like that he can build and doesn't take a lot to put together more than likely with fairly large peices as Downs children still have problems with their motor skills.

How about giving out prizes for bowling? You could award someone with the highest score, lowest score, strike in the 3rd frame (any frame), most consecutive strikes, most gutters, etc. Make it fun. That could take up at least 15 - 20 minutes depending on how many awards you give.
