I'm a low-income, disabled individual who is having difficulty finding an apartment. I'm living in an abusive situation with my brother, & I have no place else to turn to. I start back up with college on Monday, & I'd hate to go to school & live in a homeless shelter at the same time. I get my disability checks tomorrow.

Would it sound like a crazy, nonsensical idea to put all my stuff in storage for $60/month & go live in a battered women's homeless shelter? My brother used to beat on me when I was younger, & I'm afraid he's gonna start back up again because he yells at me for no reason, he's controlling & bossy, he steals from me, & he tries to sucker me out of all of my disability checks so I won't have any money.

I heard that those shelters can be dangerous. At least that is what I hear about the ones in my area. Start checking into low-income or student housing and get out as soon as you can. You are living in an awful situation but I don't really think a shelter is the answer. Usually colleges have a list of lower priced apartments available for the students and you can check into those. Is there a chance you can do dorm living?

If you think your brother will be more volatile because he knows you have your check, you may have to leave. Make sure you put the money in the bank rather than have it with you no matter where you decide to stay.

To get yourself out of a bad situation, for now you should go with the plan of going to a battered womens shelter.... while you are there they will be able to help you find an apartment that would fit your income. A lot of apartment complexes base your rent off your income ...say you are only able to bring in $1,000 a month, your rent would be from $100-$200 a month.... some include a couple utilities in your rent too.
Your best bet is to look up an Abuse Hotline or Shelter for your area and call them, ask them to help you.

See if there is a Catholic Charities near you, they area good agency. Also you could try the Salvation Army, they run residences in some cities and they are quite nice. Why is your brother so angry? Is it possible to talk to him? You didn't say what your disability was because there are different agencies for different kinds of disabilities. You could try United Cerebral Palsy because they deal with a lot of different ones and could refer you if you don't fall into their group. Can you speak to a counselor at your school? Are there dorms at your school? Most 4 year colleges have a counselor for handicapped students. Good luck.
