I mean, look, Im just as guilty. You want the person to not be sad or whatever, so you tell them some fairy tale to shut them up. But what is going to happen when these people find out that the majority of them will end up on the streets or worse? Not only that but the chances of them being taken advantage of robbed, beaten, etc. are far higher than that of their able bodied counterparts? I genuinely fear that at least a few of them may try to physically mutilate random people, am I the only one?

you know what dude, as a "disabled" person i damn well know that i'm at the bottom of the food chain, i don't enjoy it, i do want to work but i can't, so if you want to pay me to do something i'm able to do.. why not give me a job huh?

I've been on the streets, i've been hungry, i've been beaten, robbed, and harrassed by the police....

do you think i like it?
HELL NO
what am i supposed to do abourt it? i can only do what i can do, and it's not enough to survive, but you make it work.

why not be honest for a change?
why not help out when you can?
why not volenteer? be a friend to someone who has lost all of theirs?

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?

go ahead, you can keep sitting around, seeing this **** happen.. but you're only going to continue feeling guilty, because you know that you are ABLE to help....

"find out just how dire their situation is?" - sorry to disappoint you - they already know.

"You want the person to not be sad or whatever, so you tell them some fairy tale to shut them up" - what make you assume they are sad? Telling them to shut up? Why? Are they talking too much? Aren't you the one that is doing all the talking telling them stuff so they don't get "sad"?

"the majority of them will end up on the streets or worse?" What FACT can you tell me that it is happening? I have several friends who have severe disability and they have a reasonably good home to live in and they paticipate society and play sport and travel - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

"am I the only one?" NO - but you're one of the very few. You have NO idea about disability issues (but think you do)

Remeber - YOU also could becoem disabled - in an instant! A drunk driver could hit you. You could slip on wet footpath and break your spine or hit your head and get permanent brain damage. ANYONE ANYTIME can become disabled. And that includes YOU!

Unfortunately there are still a lot of bigoted people who continue to belittle and smear people with disabilities to cover up their own inadequacies.

These are the people who say that persons with disabiities can't compete--and so will be ddisappointed when they find out they aren't good enough to be treated like real people. And to excuse their bigotry, they claim persons with disabilities can't take care of themselves--that they'll "be taken advantage of or robbed." And spread lies that persons with disabilities are violent.

In other words--they are exactly the same as racists or any other kind of bigoted trash--they're just think its still safe to victimize disabled people.

P.S. I'll put my 3 advanced degrees and summa c um laude up against whatever you've got any day of the week.

PPS-- (you can skip this, its for a human being):
isotope2--please stick around. This is a new board on Y/A and there are a lot of good people here. :)

My father is in a wheelchair and has a house and has never told me he was robbed, beaten etc. And, if everyone accepted people with disabilities and respected them, then those things wouldn't have as good a chance of happening. That is why it is good there is an americans with disabilities act, which prohibits refusing to give a person with a disability a job because of their disability in some curcumstances. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans_with_Disabilities_Act
So, it would be less hard for them to be homeless because they didn't have money.

Where do you get this mentality? The piece you just typed described some people with no disabilities. They chose that type of life. I know disabled people who are doing the best that they can. I also know people with no disabilities who are doing nothing for themselves. I would love to see those disability-free people with a disability all of a sudden. They're are so many who are so ungrateful for the life they lead. I don't understand that either. I wish that I had no disabilities, but I've been hanidcapped all of my life. People wouldn't give me the time of day growing up. They assumed that disabled people are a waste of time and would rather have parasifes with no disabilites.

I do see your point. Because of illness, I suffered for many years and wound up on the streets for 8 1/2 years UNTIL I got fed up of the "system" in this country. Seems anymore this country is full of hypocrites in Washington and State governments for they go around the world trying to help everyone BUT American citizens. Look at Iraq. Then look at all this debate about illegal immigrants. When the politians of this country SHOULD immerse themselves in all the peoples who live in poverty or on the streets, they spend BILLIONS on peoples who haven't even contributed a dime to our system of government. The plight of the disabled and those who are too ill to work is HORRIBLE in this country but try to tell that to HYPOCRITES who make the laws in our Nation and State houses. I have been ill with MS and debilitating arthritis for over 16 years and have applied to Social Security "3" times and DENIED each time. "Yet," these very same politians act so ignorant to all the people who keep losing it and murdering so many randomly. I wonder WHY??????

If you can't be positive do everybody a favor, including me, who does have a disability, and for your information "smart@ss" my situation is not dire so since you can't say anything positive and you obviously don't know what in the hell you are talking about, get out of this section and shut the hell up!

You are one of the most horrible people on this planet. It was thoughts such as yours that fueled the Nazi Holocaust during WW2. People like yourself and Adolf Hitler have a deep-rooted hatred which is an illness that needs to be cured. Seek therapy, before you hurt someone.

Come on!
That is the most prejudiced and ridiculous statement.
Just because a person has the challenge of a disability, does not mean they cannot succeed.
Don't you remember Franklin Roosevelt. our president....who was physically disabled??
