Is Christmas a religious holiday in the US?

Do you think that most people in the US celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday or a national one? (Not specifically for YOU, but the country as a whole.)

I know many nonreligious people here that celebrate it, and they don't see it as strictly Christian. So what's your view?

As an Atheist what type of funeral ceremony would you want?

My husband and I neither want anything religious as part of our funerals because we are Atheists. Have you been to an Atheist's funeral? And if so, what did the ceremony entail? As an Atheist, what would you want at your own funeral?

Please help me find an appropriate bible verse!?

I am teaching High Schoolers tomorrow, and will be talking about the Von Maur shooting. I will also talk about the shooting in Salt Lake City, the one in Columbine, the Amish school house shooting in PA, a bit about 9/11...I want to get across the point that our days may be numbered, and we don't know when our lives may be over. Be ready...

why are so many Christians saying "Christians aren't perfect" nowadays?

Is this some sort of mantra the Christian community is spreading in order to excuse all of the behavior that is so opposite of what Christ is about. Does admitting you are a sinner to the public relieve the guilt?

Hearing more of the sadder version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"...?

I've noticed this year, and perhaps last year, that I'm hearing the original, sadder lyrics of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" being played over the airwaves. I hear "Next year all our troubles will be out of sight" and "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow", rather than the more typical "From now on our troubles will be out of sight" and "Hang a shining star upon the highest bow"? I have my ideas why more people want to sing the darkest lyrics this year (and maybe last year, too), but why do you think this is happening?

I believe in GOD and I go to church every Sunday....?

The problem is my friend dosen't believe in the Bible or in church but in GOD. What is there for me to do? How can I get her to come to my church? What can I tell her to believe in the Bible? She feels as though the Bible is a book that was made by a person that was not in the time of everything that occured.

OK... just made level 5, this question will throw me back into 4, however, I want to know do you truly know?

yourself and have true admiration for yourself? or do U just look in the mirror and try to just get by? I have seen this today, here of all places. And Kudos to all the kind souls here who have tried to do good things for people. All we can do is our best yes? We do and should admire ourselves for being the good people we are!

Can "spirituality" be purely neurological or emotional as atheists choose to interpret the term?

An earlier question quoted "atheists" Dawkins and Harris:

Sam Harris said "We need a positive statement of…spiritual experience,…[though without] any endorsement of divisive superstitions."

Dawkins says he's in favor of "mystical spirituality."

Respondents demonstrated a purely materialistic understanding of the term "spirituality" by explaining it in terms of emotional and neurological experience. However, to the religious, a spirit such as the Holy Spirit is not thought to be neurological or physical in any way. Do not atheists not try to impose a materialistic interpretation on a word which signifies something non-material?
