I can tell you why it was originally thought to be wrong: in the times that the Bible was being written and compiled (both old and new testaments), they didn't know squat about biology. They thought that a man's semen contained little-bitty, itsy-bitsy babies in it. They thought the woman's womb was just a sort of fertile field for the itsy-bitsy baby to grow in. They had no clue about ovaries and thought women bled every month because God cursed Eve. I know. Go figure.

So if a man shot his semen anywhere else but inside a woman, that was murdering the little babies in there.

Why do they still stay it's a sin? The Church still holds tight to the thought that sexual response is reserved for procreation only. Of course they don't still believe in the homonucleus (the itty-bitty babies in semen), but they still say masturbation is wrong because it's a sexual response outside of the possibility of procreation.

If I caught my step-daughter masturbating, I'd give myself a minute to recover from the nausea, then I would try to make sure she wasn't embarrassed or felt bad about it. Herr Pope Ratzinger might not agree, but that's what I would do.

PS I'm Catholic.

Masturbating is wrong because it is unfair for people who don't have any hands and therefore can not masturbate. Imagine if there was a group of people with wings and they could fly. How would you feel if you didn't have wings and had to watch people flying around all the time? You might think it was unfair that God let some people fly but not you. When God was writing the bible he saw this problem and decided that people shouldn't have wings and they shouldn't masturbate.

Also what would I do I if I caught my children masturbating? I would say "Damn you devil, damn you for using your trickery to get my little babies to masturbate. And damn you for using your trickery to bring my babies back in time long before they born. I will not forgive you serpent! Send my babies back to their correct time, at which point I will punish them for jerking off!"

Masturbation is dangerous because it ultimately distorts true sexual pleasure. It creates an illusion or fantasy of what sexual pleasure is. It demands a fantasy, thus the widespread use of pornography by those who masturbate. This self-deception can harm the person's marriage in that the fantasy can become more desirable than real sexual union with one's spouse.

Secondly, it instills in the individual a warped outlook toward others. It makes others "objects" for selfish gratification. There is little, if any, love for the object rather simply a desire to use the other for a selfish end.

Finally, masturbation is dangerous because it can become an obsessive habit which can lead into greater sexual sins. We have already mentioned pornography, but masturbation also can lead to fornication and/or adultery. Like alcoholism and drug addiction, habitual masturbation craves higher and higher degrees of pleasure. This craving often results in the seeking out of others to fulfill one's sexual desires.

Masturbation is not pleasing to God, nor does it respect the design and purpose of human sexuality.

God bless ya.

Masturbation is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord Our God who created sex for the purpose of procreation, not for animal lust. That's why we are or should be superior to all animals. We have a soul that we must respect and they have no soul. We are saved and go to heaven through Jesus Christ Our Savior and they do not. Furthermore, masturbation can cause blindness, it can make you stutter, it can make you limp, it kills many brain cells to the point that you lose all your intelligence, it may make you infertile and it may even kill you. But masturbation is wrong to Our Father because it calls for animal lust. Of I caught my son masturbating I would certainly make him feel ashamed about it and I would punish him severely. Personally, I only masturbated once but I'll always regret it. May Jesus enlighten your way and keep you from sin.

God created people to have these urges to masturbate. Its all human nature and put there by God, and God does not punish it as a sin. Masturbation is normal and is not a sin in any sense of the word. No where in God's Ten Commandments does it say "Thou shalt not masturbate."

There are some Christians with enough brains to know it isn't wrong. Dr. Dobson has written on this subject, and if you are interested in what he has to say, here are some links:

I thought there was something in the Bible about not spilling seed? (which would only prohibit male masturbation) I'm not christian, so somebody else might know which passage i'm referring to.

No one said it WAS wrong. The Bible does not state that it is wrong.

Who told you that it was?
