I think most babies are born tabula rosa and most behaviors, including sarcasm, are learned by example. I really try not to be sacrastic, but sometimes, it just slips out in response to certain stimuli. Usually I try to smile and make a joke to take the sting out, when I realize what I've said, but most times sarcasm is cruel, or intended to be critical. Also I think sometimes people who are sarcastic tend to look down on others and that is a way of showing their superiority and belittling someone else. Or to make someone else seem dumb or foolish, and themselves smarter, if they have an inferiority thing going on.

I believe sarcasm is one of the ways we learn to be mean to other people. I'm not an unhappy person but I have been known to be cruelly sarcastic when provoked. It's a semi-civilized way to express anger with another person. Better than punching them in the nose I guess. Where I grew up it was called being a Smart A@S.
(I'm going to be sweet and kind the rest of the day. The YA police sent me a violation notice because of my TRUTHFUL reply to one of the hecklers.)

Sarcasm can be good or bad. Some people are just born to do it. When used as humor I consider it an art form. I don't feel that sarcasm = unhappy

I use sarcasm in a more comical way rather than sounding like a person with a sour attitude. I'm a very happy person even though I have plenty of reasons to be unhappy. But like I said, I use sarcasm, not in a "bitchy" way, but in a way that people enjoy sometimes. I've been like that since I was very young.

If it is a "mean" kind of sarcasm then I would say alittle of both . I think sometimes there can be a humorous type of sarcasm ...more like quick witted. People who are unhappy usually love to share it . The saying misery loves company I find to be very true.

I never really thought I was so sarcastic until i mentioned to one of my friends that My Mom says I'm sarcastic. She said " D U H" so I guess I am, it is such a knee jerk reaction, I don't even think about it.I don't think I'm unhappy, I was picked on as a young girl so I don't give people a chance to denigrate me. I take preventative action. But I have seen Janeanne Garofalo on tv and she is very sarcastic so maybe you're right. She doesn't strike one as a very happy person

There are different types of humor and sarcasm is one of them and Jay Leno is good at it! I also think he is a happy person.
Now sarcasm just to hurt someone is bad and I try not to use it, if I do use it I find that I do because I have been hurt by what was said to me like a defense mechanism. I rarely use it.

heard that sarcasm is used by people that have pushed hurt feelings inside. and tend to use it as a defense mechanism . so to you they might seem unhappy but they are just acting out in a way that does not hurt others.

I believe BOTH! Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit (to quote my English Prof.), and is usually used by people who have low-self esteem issues! Just my opinion and observation!

Good sarcasm has nothing to do with joy -- it's an art form that takes a lot of talent and practice.
