Winter is the reason for the season. The reason it's a time of celebration goes all the way back to the first winter (on both hemispheres) after the earth tilted. The days got shorter and shorter and shorter for the first time ever. Then the solistice occured and a wave of hope was felt by the consciousness of that part of earth as the days began getting a bit longer once again.
