It's been suggested that one way to come to believe in God is by talking to him/asking him to reveal himself. To me, this seems like it would require that I believe I am talking/asking an existing entity.

How could one pray to God without believing in God?

It's sometimes asked on here if the world would be a better place if religion as an institution were eliminated. Often the comments from (presumed non-adherents) indicate it would be.

To those that would answer in the affirmative to the above-referenced question: would the world be better with a formal doctrine of atheism - in order to combat the rise of the further influence of theism - or is it sufficient to simply try to raise critically-thinking members of society?

In other words, atheism as a social institution or simply as the lack of an alternative social institution (religion)?

Part of the reason for asking this question is that, while most atheists arrive at their 'belief' through an application of some degree of skepticism/critical analysis, some do not; this latter group is often born into atheism, or accepts it blindly.

Hello, Blessings and Peace,

If you have any knowledge of gnosticism, manichaeanism or mandaeanism then would you be willing to profess their tenets and teachings and at the same time practice them?

I ask because, esp with men and women of intellect, reason, logic, knowledge and of the experience if life I can imagine agnostics and atheists and humanists as becoming greater gnostics, manichaeans or mandaeans. See this not as an threat, since I or the gnostic, manichaean or mandaean do no wrong to any fellow dweller in the inn (from the Hymn of the Pearl).

Can you anything to this?

Andre
Manichaean Probationer and Nazorean Gnostic

"the search for gnosis, wisdom and compassion adds value to the passer by"- that what I say.

The bible is equal to the book of scientology with one difference; one was written over 1600 years ago and one was written less than 50 years ago. But they are equally ludicrous.

Christians, I know you disagree, that's why I am not asking you. I am asking those that can make choices based on facts and not "faith."

Behold this was the sin of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness... and she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Oh uh... looks like the sacred mysteries of the mind (aka soul) are starting to fade!!

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,299456,00.html

So, if my video game console knows what I'm thinking, and knows how focused I am, or if I'm bored... does that mean my pastor lied to me when I was little, when he said only God knows what I'm thinking?

More importantly... when our understanding of the brain gets to the point where we understand almost all of the cause & effect relationships... what room is going to be left for the soul? How are we going to squeeze "free will" or spiritual accountability into a body that follows the laws of physics?

I was listening to NPR and there was a woman who was asked if she liked Obama. She said he was a very impressive speaker. and she really liked his message, and felt that there needed to be a change in Washington. But she said she wasn't sure if she was going to actually vote for him because she didn't think a Black man could be elected president.

So what she is saying is, because everybody else is racist, she has to vote along with the racist?

Is this aversive racism? or just plain racism?

Why, when challenged about their religion, do christians revert to quoting verses from the bible(most of which dont make any sense), to try to make us believe their outragious fairytale?
