salvation army either ringing bells or angel tree. (this is what my family usually does)

other suggestions...
soup kitchens (would actually show her why she should be thankful for the things she has)

make christmas cards and distribute them at a nursing home. you'd be surprised how many elderly do not have family or visitors. it makes their day.

as far as contacts, call your local community center or social services. they can provide you with info on volunteerism.

My dad and I always make a really nice Christmas food box for a lady who used to be a client of his and really has no family and no money . . . she's very old and doesn't get out much. Of course we bring her a turkey and a sack of potatoes and all the trimmings for a Christmas dinner, but we also pack her freezer and pantry full of food that will last her a couple of months into the new year.

I know this isn't a large scale thing, but sometimes there are people you know who you can make an effort with instead of feeling like you have to make a huge public effort to do something. Maybe if you have neighborhood kids that you know aren't going to have a lavish Christmas, without making the family feel weird about it, you could bring by a bunch of food or some presents. Or you could do it anonymously by sticking gift cards in their mail box for the grocery store or toy store. I'm sure it would be appreciated and it's nice to show your care for the people you see everyday but who aren't really in your family. You know?

Each yeasr we have a Christmas Party at church. During the party we put baskets of food, clothing or whatever else is needed in the cars of families we know are in need of help. The children participate too.
You can do this to a family in your neighborhood that may be having a hard time. Leave it on the doorstep and ring the bell. and leave. Kids love doing this.
Years ago when I was in college with a wife and three children someone did this to us. Now we are passing in on.

I used to do the shoebox thing someone else mentioned, it's called Operation Christmas Child. I want to work at an animal shelter at Christmas, because that is the time when the highest number of animals are abandoned.

My temple holds a Christmas dinner for people, and my Youth Group also makes cards, and donates gifts.

at my church, there is a christmas tree full of ornaments with children names on them and the gifts they really want. you pick an ornament and buy the toys on it. then u give the presents to the church and they give it to the orphanage.
