I don't know where this idea came from, but it's been around as long as I've had internet access (a while). Personally, I don't pay any attention to upper or lower case typing as long as the first letter of every sentence is capitalized and I can understand what you are saying.

I don't take all caps as shouting or rude unless the context of the message indicates that it is intended as such. I know a lot of older folks that use all caps because it is easier for them to read.

I don't like reading a message that is all lowercase because in my opinion it shows the writer made very little effort. Just a pet peeve of mine, I guess.

All caps is the typed version of yelling. If you type a word out that way, you are yelling it to the person reading it. IS it rude to yell at someone for no reason?

As noted, netiquette provides that typing in all capitals is the equivalent to shouting, and most Internet users perceive it as very rude. If you know a person well and know that they are not angry, but use all caps, you must just chalk it up to ignorance of proper, accepted Internet etiquette. If possible, you may save them embarrassment down the road if you let them know how their entries are percieved.

Typing in all lower case leads me to believe that the writer is either ignorant of the grammatical rules of capitalization, or too lazy to type his or her entry appropriately.

Basically using Capital letters doesn't really mean that you are shouting, it means that you want the person to pay attention to what you are saying.

So it's not rude, but it can be considered grammatically wrong if your using them just because you refuse to undo the Caps Lock botton.

As everyone else has already stated, using all caps is interpreted as shouting and yes, that's rude. Remember to use your "inside" computer voice...LOL

Capital letters usually mean empasis if it is used on one word, and there is no way to use bold type, as in YA. But when you use all caps, it usually means you are angry or you are shouting.
Many rooms as well as YA have this against their rules when posting. Also, it is considered distracting.
It is a rule of internet etiquette, also.

In general, since the person reading what you typed has to interpret based on what you typed....all capital letters is perceived as shouting! All lower case is perceived as lazy.

hmm i don't know...I'm not so sure who gave upper case typing letters the "yelling"/"rude" association.......but I write in all caps, and not a single person has said anything to me about it looking like I'm yelling...so I guess it wouldn't apply to typing online either...at least for me it doesn't.

3 thumbs down? pretty strong opinions about TYPING IN ALL CAPS HUH?

Using upper case (Capitals) means you are SHOUTING. That's why it's rude
