For various reasons, I have already started both. I can do basic greetings and numbers, and what not. I even used some of my Mandarin in China a few months ago as an independent traveler. But I also really want to learn Irish (I have an opportunity for free courses with a small group of people).
I will probably do both, so my question is more of a "which one should I learn first?"

I recently visited a Church and the pastor said, unless you are baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of Speaking in Tongues, then your prayers are worthless since they have no power behind them.

I almost came out of my chair.

What about the 'sinners' prayer????

sure, god is loving and all that, but also look:
he gets jealous
he gets fussy
he sends people to hell
he punishes
he forbids perfectly natural things
He wants you to FEAR him

Why worship a god that just seems like an abusive spouse?

I've had good success with novice Bible Readers by starting them off with Job and Mark. I feel those two clearly answer a lot of questions that novices have. Do you have any particular Books you recommend for novices?

It seems to me that whenever I talk to Christians, they have no doubts that God is real. Take my brother for example. He is entirely confident of God's existence, and even if there was hard evidence against it, he would still believe. Personally, I find that close-minded. I THINK that God is real, and I'm almost sure, but I don't want to completely rule out other possibilities. Does that make me non-Christian or immoral?

There are a lot of Asians living in my area, mostly Vietnamese and Chinese. So naturally the city is dominated by Asian restaurants and bars. The other night I decided to try a new bar out. I could see that I would be the only non-Asian there but I didn't think that would be a problem. But when I walked in, it was like all of a sudden everyone was staring at me and possibly talking about me in Chinese. I felt like I was an unwanted presence there. I just got a lot of looks that were less than friendly. I got one drink and left because I was really uncomfortable. It's too bad because it was a nice place. Is it rude for me to go to Asian bars or am I reading the situation wrong? I mean, I never made an Asian man uncomfortable when he was in a mostly white bar, I assumed it worked the other way as well.

...left us first-hand accounts of his knowledge of Christ?

For example:
John had THIS to say:
"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have SEEN with our eyes, which we have LOOKED upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
(For the life was manifested, and we have SEEN it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
That which WE HAVE SEEN AND HEARD DECLARE WE UNTO YOU, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."
I John 1:1-5
Is that wonderful or what?

First, I would like serious, and NOT insulting answers please. Second, I am a conservative Christian. I was brought up with adult baptism (and personally still agree with it, after studying all Biblical references.... baptism always happened after conversion). However, I have married into Lutheranism, which I don't mind in itself, except for when we have children and they are to be baptized as infants. Also, since baptism is not the way to Heaven, should I even be concerned with it, or should I just let it go???

when your understanding of God in your heart is at times inconsistant with how God is portrayed in parts of The Bible?

I know some of you will be offended I'm even asking such a question. I'm hope I'm not the only one who strugges with this.

For example, in my heart, God is loving and forgiving (prodigal son story comes to mind). Yet God is not always portayed in this light in many parts of The Bible. Because of this, I have always struggled with Christianity (I have not struggled with my commitment to God.)

2007-08-14 15:55:38 · 52 answers · asked by Colin 5 in Religion & Spirituality

It seems that nowadays, many people believe that a person's religious views should never completely reflect what is taught in the bible. Instead, they throw all the values and laws from the bible in the same pot as all that we have learned from modern culture, and they see what floats.

For example, I have heard many people call themselves "Christian", but they have edited christianity to fit their own agenda. I've heard some people say: "I'm a Christian - but I believe that everyone will eventually go to heaven, I believe that homosexual acts are not sinful, and I believe that humans evolve from monkeys." What??? You beliefs and values are incompatible with Christianity, yet you call yourself a Christian!!!

I don't understand how people think they have the right to do this. It's as if everything in the bible is conditional, and needs to be changed every once in a while ... NO!! It doesn't!!

Why must people do this. It seems 'real' Christianity is harder to find these days.

Can I write:

If, when you're writing, you need help spelling a word, then ask ...." (etc)...

Can I have commas there? Or it is grammatically incorrect?

I think it gives emphases to the series of components in the sentence.
